BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – Thomas Howard, 69, passed away on Dec. 21, 2024, in Bonita Springs, Fla., due to complications from a brain aneurysm. Born on March 21, 1955, in Portland, Maine, Tom lived a life marked by entrepreneurial spirit, deep connections with others, and a profound love for his family and community. He grew up in North Deering and graduated from Deering High School in 1973.
A true visionary and self-starter, Tom built a legacy through his passion for business and his unwavering determination. He was the proud founder of Pippity Pop Popcorn, a successful popcorn venture that reflected both his creativity and commitment to quality. His entrepreneurial journey continued with the opening of J.P. Thornton’s, a beloved restaurant named in honor of his mother, Joan P. (Thornton) Howard. There, Tom shared not only his culinary talents, especially his renowned pizza-making skills, but also created a welcoming space where people could gather and connect.
Whether he was running his own restaurant or grabbing a bite at a local favorite, Tom thrived in the warm, inviting atmosphere of places where connections happened naturally — with the person on the barstool next to him, the friendly staff, or anyone sharing the space. Those spots meant a great deal to him, and he left a lasting impression on everyone who shared a beer, a story, or a laugh along the way.
Tom had an extraordinary gift for making meaningful connections wherever he went. His warm spirit and friendly nature left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to cross his path. Whether in business or in everyday life, he brought joy and energy to every interaction.
He found true peace by the ocean, where he loved spending time with those closest to him. The beach was more than just a place; it was where he laughed freely with his friends and loved ones to soak up the simple pleasures of life. A devoted fan of the New England Patriots, Tom rarely missed a game and cheered passionately for his team. Music was another constant companion throughout his life, providing the soundtrack to countless cherished memories.
Above all else, Tom treasured his family. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Thomas Howard II and his wife, Erika, and their children, Audrey and Gabe; Kara Kitchen and her husband, Aaron, and their son, Davis; and Jonathan Howard. He is also survived by his former wife, Kathy (Howard) Allen, with whom he shared many meaningful years and raised their children.
Tom is further survived by his siblings, Jeff Howard, Laura Hallgren and her husband, Paul, and Krista Tobin and her husband, Shawn; as well as his niece and nephew, Devin and Olivia.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Joan and Gilbert Howard.
His legacy lives on not only through the businesses he built but also through the countless lives he touched with kindness, laughter, and generosity. His drive was matched only by his compassion, a rare combination that made him truly unforgettable.
May the memory of Thomas Howard bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire those who carry on the values he held close. A private burial will be held with family.
