Helen M. (Darling) Hovey

YARMOUTH – Helen, also known as “Dood” passed away very peacefully, June 14, 2025, at her residence in Yarmouth, at the age 101 years.

She was born in Portland and the daughter of Leroy Darling and Sadie Morton Darling. She graduated high school in 1942 and later went to work at Fox Lumber Company as the company bookkeeper for 25 years. She later retired to spend time with her husband, George.

She enjoyed baking cookies of all kinds especially at Christmas time. She baked hundreds of cookies for her family and friends every year and we all looked forward to it as they were the best. Summers were also her favorite time to go out for lunches for fresh haddock and lobster rolls all the while enjoying the warm ocean breezes.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, George Hovey; and brothers Dick Cliff Roy and Dwight Darling, her sisters Grace Pinka, Doris Strout, Margaret Weeman and Elizabeth Hurley. She was also predeceased by her cousin, Carol Campbell; and her very close friend, Ann Sheldon. She was very close to these ladies and grateful they were part of her life.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews Mick and Sharon Pinka, Terry and Cinda Strout, Robin and Claude Ouellet Randy and Teri Strout, Drew and Tracy Darling, Stacy and Dave Thibeault, Jason Darling; sisters-in law Bea Robichaud and Sue Cheetham; many great-nieces and nephews. Her many close friends Val and Michelle Sheldon; and daughters Peg Davis, Jill, Marg, and Nancy; and her Bay Square Family who she cared deeply for.

Graveside service is planned for Helen on June 30 at 11 a.m. in Brooklawn Memorial Cemetery.
