The Maine Marine Patrol on Saturday recovered the body of a Milbridge man who went missing while harvesting clams more than one month ago.
Alton Wallace, 51, was reported missing by a family member on the afternoon of May 18 when he did not return from his trip. The state Department of Marine Resources said in a news release Saturday that a fisherman found the man’s body near the high-water line on the western shore of Foster Island in Narraguagus Bay. Marine Patrol officers responded and recovered Wallace at approximately 11 a.m.
The search involved several agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard and the Maine Warden Service. Local fisherman and community members also joined the effort. The Maine Marine Patrol had been searching for Wallace on the water and by plane.
Wallace’s last cellphone ping showed he was near Fickett Point around 7:30 a.m. on May 18, at the mouth of the Narraguagus River in Milbridge. Foster Island is approximately one mile east of Fickett Point.
The news release said that Wallace’s body has been transported to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
