KENNEBUNK — Sharp from beginning to end in a Class A semifinal on its home field, Kennebunk High’s girls lacrosse team made it clear Wednesday that it deserved to return to the state championship game at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
The top-ranked and undefeated Rams took control early and were never threatened in a 14-4 victory against 13th-seeded Cape Elizabeth.
“Everyone comes to get the No. 1 seed, so you have to be on your best game,” said Kennebunk coach Annie Barker, adding that her team was “very well prepared. For sure.”
Kennebunk will face No. 2 Windham (16-1) on Saturday at Portland’s Fitzpatrick Stadium, where it won three straight Class A titles from 2021-23.
“Kennebunk has such a good history, but we’re such a new team,” said junior midfielder Anna McCarron. “We’re not the same as we were last year or two years ago. I just feel so proud of everyone who stepped up, that we carried ourselves to state. No one else did this. We did this. We and the coaches. We worked hard.”
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kennebunk’s Camdyn Keenan scored the first two goals in less than two minutes. Before the first quarter was over, Anna McCarron scored twice and draw specialist Madeline Dowling and Helen Kennie each added a goal as the Rams built a 6-0 lead.
It was 10-2 at halftime.
The Rams got off to a slower start in their 11-7 quarterfinal win against eighth-seeded Thornton Academy.
“Our game against TA, we let them get up early, so I think we were really focused on trying to come out and getting up early this game,” Keenan said.
Keenan, a junior attack, had four goals by halftime, setting up shop on the deep right side and then angling toward goal until looking for a spot to get off shots from a variety of angles.
Cape’s Campbell DeGeorge (three goals) scored two man-up goals early in the third quarter to cut the lead to 10-4. Kennie quickly countered with two of her own, including a rifled shot from distance that zipped into the top of the goal.
WHAT’S NEXT
Kennebunk (17-0) will face a state final newbie in Windham. Kennebunk beat Windham, 10-6, in its season opener on April 17.
“I think we’re both very strong. It’s going to come down to all about matchups,” Barker said. “Like, who we have on who? And defensively, who we can stop, who we can slow down? Possessing the ball because they’re dangerous when they have the ball. So all those things will be taught in the next two days.”
Windham won 23 out of 27 draws in its 16-8 semifinal win against Falmouth.
“I think the most important part will be the draw, and winning the draw and getting it on the offensive side,” Keenan said.
Cape Elizabeth (8-9) extended it season with playoff upsets of No. 4 Gorham and No. 5 Cheverus. The Capers’ competitive regular-season schedule prepared them well, coach Alex Spark said.
“As a 13 seed, we were excited to take on some of those top seeds and we really did feel prepared because we saw everything throughout our regular season,” Spark said. “Credit where credit is due, Kennebunk is a fantastic team. They have incredible athletes, incredible stick skills, but we … had these moments where we showed how much better we’ve gotten.”
NOT A ONE-WOMAN SHOW
For long stretches of the game, Cape chose to face guard Keenan. Keenan showed her passing skills with three second-half assists. Kennie and McCarron also scored four goals. Dowling, Kennie and McCarron formed a strong trio in the draw circle.
“I just love our energy and our team chemistry,” said McCarron, a midfielder with speed. “None of us are selfish players. We use each other. All seven of us on attack can score. We trust each other.”
