FREEPORT — For years, the Freeport boys lacrosse team has struggled in the quarterfinal round. Saturday against Brunswick, the Falcons finally got over the hump.

Five players scored multiple goals for fourth-seeded Freeport, which used an early outburst to beat fifth-seeded Brunswick, 12-8, in a Class B quarterfinal.

Freeport (11-4) advances to face top-seeded York (13-2) on Wednesday in Biddeford. Brunswick, which had reached three straight semifinals, ends the season 10-6.

“We had the ability to beat these guys, I think we knew that,” Freeport junior Jackson Moore said. “I think we played almost a perfect game, visually (and) on paper.”

Moore scored four goals, including three in the first seven minutes of play. Freeport scored on its first five shots and led 6-2 after the opening quarter.

“Against a team like Brunswick — they are very well coached, very disciplined, very good — we knew that we were going to have to start fast,” Freeport coach Brendan Boss said. “We also knew that they were going to come back. And I thought our guys did a good job of staying disciplined and composed when that run came, because it did, and they just weathered the storm and made enough plays to win it.”

Randall Walker (two assists), David Ulrickson (assist), Hunter Richard and Findlay Love each scored twice for the Falcons. Freshman Levi DiGristina added two assists.

After briefly being pulled in the first quarter, senior goalie Brady Marzakis (13 saves) helped energize the Brunswick offense with key stops and clears up the field.

Midway through the third quarter, Brunswick roared back with three goals in three minutes to pull within 8-7. Freeport, however, stayed composed and on the attack, taking advantage of a man-up situation shortly before the fourth quarter and strong ball movement after the break to push its lead back to three.

Eben White scored his second goal of the game on Brunswick’s next possession to make it 10-8, but Freeport goalie Dom Randall (23 saves) stopped seven fourth-quarter shots to help protect the Falcons’ lead.

Junior attacker Robbie Bowen (assist) and freshman attacker Ryan Livesay also scored twice for Brunswick, and senior midfielders Avery Tatham and Gabe Shoemaker each contributed a goal.

(Playing from behind is) not a spot we were unfamiliar with,” Brunswick coach Ben Herman said. “The talk all week was, they’re a good team, and we need to stay with them, we can’t let them get up too much. Which unfortunately, we did. You know, we went to the regional (final) last year, and they all wanted to get back there, so it sucks to lose, but it’s to a good team.”
