Brayden Wilson capped an eight-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with a grand slam, lifting sixth-seeded Lake Region to an 8-4 win over 10th-seeded Wells in a Class B South baseball prelim Wednesday at Naples.
Wells (7-10) opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, then added two runs in the third, including an RBI double by AJ Pelletier.
Caleb Moody made it 4-0 with a home run in the top of the seventh.
Lake Region (13-4) moves on to play third-seeded York in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
GORHAM 4, NOBLE 0: Wyatt Nadeau struck out 13 and allowed only one hit as the sixth-seeded Rams (12-5) shut out the 11th-seeded Knights (7-10) in a Class A South prelim at Gorham.
Wesley Turnbull’s second-inning single was the only hit allowed by Nadeau, who issued two walks.
Gorham took the lead with three runs in the third inning, on a wild pitch and a two-run single by Jack Karlonas.
Wyatt Washburn drove in the final run with his third hit of the day — a triple in the sixth inning.
Gorham next plays third-seeded Thornton Academy in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
MONMOUTH ACADEMY 10, LISBON 0: Levi Laverdiere tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk as the third-seeded Mustangs (13-4) advanced to the Class C South semifinals by shutting out the sixth-seeded Greyhounds (10-6) in a six-inning game at Monmouth.
Laverdiere had a single in the bottom of the first and scored on a double steal for the game’s first run. Bryce Fletcher added an RBI single in the second.
Monmouth ended the game with eight runs in the sixth. A Zane Foyt single brought home a run, and an error scored two more for a 5-0 lead. Sam Schultz walked with the bases loaded, then Gavin Parsons cleared the bases with a three-run single and Rory Foyt hit a walk-off double.
Spencer Fanks had two of the three Lisbon hits. Cody Osmond pitched four innings, allowing two runs — all unearned — and three hits while striking out five.
SOFTBALL
LAKE REGION 10, WELLS 3: Abbi Nadeau and Ella Gibbons both had two hits and two RBI, and Ava Cole was 3 for 3 as the eighth-seeded Lakers (10-7) won a Class B South prelim against the ninth-seeded Warriors (8-9) in Naples.
Lake Region broke open a close game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Three runs scored on wild pitches before Nadeau capped the outburst with a two-run single.
Hailey Hamlin and Cole combined on a three-hitter. Hamlin struck out seven and allowed two hits through five innings.
Payton Fazzina led Wells with a single, a double and two runs scored.
Lake Region advances to play No. 1 York in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
GIRLS LACROSSE
YARMOUTH 8, MASSABESIC 7: Vivienne Corriveau capped a fourth-quarter comeback with 49 seconds remaining as the seventh-seeded Clippers (9-6) rallied from a 7-4 deficit to beat the 10th-seeded Mustangs (8-7) in a Class A prelim in Yarmouth.
Goals by Zinman, Erica O’Connor and Corriveau tied the game before Corriveau got the winner, assisted by O’Connor.
Zinman finished with two goals and two assists. Metta Lindsay also scored twice for Yarmouth, which next faces second-seeded Windham in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Lydia Desrochers paced Massabesic with four goals. Paige Stephenson scored twice.
CAPE ELIZABETH 17, GORHAM 11: Campbell DeGeorge scored seven goals as the 13th-seeded Capers (7-8) knocked off the fourth-seeded Rams (10-5) in a Class A prelim at Gorham.
Wylie Stoecklein added five goals and Libby Hooper had three for Cape Elizabeth.
Gorham got five goals from Logan Doughty, four from Piper Forgues and two from Haylie Nicely.
CHEVERUS 16, BANGOR/OLD TOWN/JOHN BAPST/ORONO 6: Sophia St. John led the fifth-seeded Stags (11-4) with five goals and two assists in a Class A preliminary-round win over the 12th-seeded Rams at Portland.
Sydney Brunelle added three goals and Sophia Tamulevich scored twice.
