Larry Cain

Scarborough voters elected Larry Cain in a special Town Council race on Tuesday.

Cain received 1,311 votes while opponent Crescencia Maurer received 1,055 votes and opponent Donald Scott Gondzar garnered 168.

Cain will fill the seat left vacant by Donald Cushing, whose resignation took effect last month, and will serve the remainder of his term through November 2026.

“One of the things I was really happy about is there was a substantial turnout increase compared to the last local-only election,” Cain said in an interview Tuesday evening.

Overall, 2,175 Scarborough voters cast their ballots on Tuesday. The last election, where only local issues were on the ballot –  June 2023 – saw less than 1,600 voters turnout to the polls.

“I think that’s just a great result for the town as a whole,” Cain said.

The rate of growth in Scarborough was identified as a top concern of voters by all three candidates ahead of the election.

“I think the rate of growth in town is really a big issue in town,” Cain said on Tuesday. “It covers a lot of other concerns, like traffic, school enrollment and public safety.”

Cain also gave a nod to one of his opponents, Maurer, who has run for local office in the past and has served on a number of municipal committees. Maurer lost out on Tuesday by just 256 votes.

“I really appreciate my opponent, Crescie Maurer,” Cain said. “She is a really smart, dedicated person who I expect to work with more in the future.”

In an uncontested race, Charlotte Jacobs, John Kelleher III and Jillian Trapini-Huff were elected to the School Board.

Scarborough voters also approved its FY26 school budget, 1,787 to 894 and voted to continue the school budget validation process, 1,765 to 860.
