Cumberland voters elected Robert Vail and Michael Edes for two at-large seats on the Cumberland Town Council on Tuesday. They will serve three-year terms.

Vail received 1,184 votes, Edes got 1,011, and opponent Ann Marie Maksymowicz had 793.

Lauren Weliver and Kimberly Vine were elected to three-year terms on the Maine School Administrative District 51 Board of Directors that serves Cumberland and North Yarmouth.

Weliver received 990 votes, Vine had 967, and opponent Cara Orton had 696.

Geoffrey Michalak won the Town Council seat for West Cumberland in an unopposed race and will serve for two years.

Cumberland residents voted 911-757 to approve the $53.8 million school budget that was adopted at the district budget meeting.North Yarmouth voted against the SAD 51 budget by 410-373 votes. However, the combined total of SAD 51 votes passed the budget 1,284-1,167.

At Cumberland Town Hall, residents voted 1,330-338 to continue the budget referendum process for the district for an additional three years.

The school budget is up by about 7.12% from the current fiscal year. Increases in salaries and benefits make up 87% of the budget increase, while other projects and positions were cut or delayed.

“The board has made a significant investment in personnel this year,” SAD 51 Superintendent of Schools Jeff Porter said when presenting the budget at a school board meeting on April 17.
