Brooklyn-based Gutter Bar is slated to open its newest bowling alley and bar location in downtown Biddeford this summer.

Located on the ground floor of the Marble Block building on Main Street, Gutter Bar will offer eight lanes of bowling, sandwiches, appetizers and craft beer from local Maine breweries.

“We’re bringing bowling to downtown Biddeford,” owner Todd Powers said.

Gutter Bar opened its first location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2007. It was the first bowling alley in Brooklyn in 40 years, Powers said.

Since then, the business has opened two more locations in New York City. The Biddeford location will be Gutter Bar’s first venture outside of New York.

Biddeford may seem like a odd jump from New York City, but for Powers, it makes perfect sense.

“I love coming up here,” Powers said. “I came up to Biddeford throughout my childhood. I wanted to do a project up here.”

Powers was asked to open a bowling alley by the owners of the Marble Block building last year. With roots in Biddeford, Powers decided to jump at the opportunity.

Gutter Bar is just one part of the effort to rehab the Marble Block building.

In February of 2024, the Biddeford City Council voted to approve a joint development agreement that included a credit enhancement to aid with the redevelopment of the building, and the owners pledged to turn the first floor into the Gutter Bar.

Last week, the Biddeford City Council voted to grant a liquor license to Gutter Bar, allowing the business to move forward toward its opening date.

“I’m very excited about this,” Powers said.

Mayor Martin Grohman also said he was excited for the new bowling alley.

“Bowling strikes by late summer,” Grohman said. “That’s perfect.”

Gutter Bar does not have an exact opening date yet, but Powers said he hopes to be open by mid-July.
