Margaret “Meg” Cushing Lavoie
PORTLAND – Margaret “Meg” Cushing Lavoie passed away on May 26, 2025, in Portland.
Meg was born Margaret Louise O’Connor on September 5, 1954, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Joseph and Mary Elizabeth O’Connor of Watertown, South Dakota. She spent significant time in Baltimore with her maternal aunt Loretta (Long) and her cousins: Rob, Mary, Paul, Loretta, Tom, and Carol. Meg graduated from high school in
1972 and promptly took off with the McGovern campaign. McGovern brought her to N.H., where she married Scott Cushing and became a mother to Alicia in 1979. Meg always wanted to be a lawyer, like the honorable Atticus Finch of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.” She graduated cum laude from the University of Maine School of Law in 1987. Meg married Mark Lavoie and became a mother again when Aislinn was born in 1992. Her devotion to her children will remain unsurpassed.
Meg has been described by countless humans as “a force of nature” – brilliant and complex, strong willed and brutally honest, fiercely loving and generous. For nearly 40 years, Meg dedicated herself to her career as an attorney. Most of that was spent practicing family law. She was an OG, unwavering in her ardor for the craft. Meg thrived on being in the know, on being so many lawyers’ go-to for advice, gossip, and a heck of a good time. Her loss will be felt by her many friends and colleagues in the community for many moons to come.
Meg was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved “My Aunt Loretta.” Meg is survived by her daughters, Alicia M. Cushing (Eric Doyle) and Aislinn M. Coker (Caleb Coker), as well as her precious grandbabies, Isla and Indy. She is also survived by her brother Michael and her Baltimore cousins, each believing to be her favorite. If you loved her, you know she just made you feel that way.
The family will be holding a small private celebration of Meg’s life.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home.
