At H.B. Provisions in Lower Village Kennebunk, it wasn’t uncommon to see famous residents like George H.W. Bush and, more recently, Patrick Dempsey stroll through the door.
Located right before the Lanigan Bridge to Kennebunkport, the general store itself is iconic, though it has recently undergone extensive renovations and been renamed KPort Provisions.
Last year, the Kittery hospitality group First Serve bought the property from former owners Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen. Thorgalsen and Clement reportedly bought the property, previously known to locals as Meserve’s Market, in 2002.
The general store fits into First Serve’s Kennebunk-area portfolio, which includes Robert’s Maine Grill and Mabel’s Lobster Claw.
Mary Pugliese, First Serve’s director of operations, said H.B. Provisions was a business that she frequented whenever she was in the area.

“When we learned that the previous owners were ready to retire, we just took the opportunity to acquire the historic business,” Pugliese said.
Over the course of a year, First Serve extensively renovated the building both inside and out. The once-yellow exterior is now a deep green, and the well-loved wooden interior of the store is now white and seafoam green with a modern and light coastal feel.

Aspects of a general store were maintained, including an area with pantry staples, rows of wine, and a wall of refrigerators stocking craft beer. KPort Provisions also features a deli counter and a high-end espresso bar serving barista-crafted drinks and homemade pastries.
“Food is in our blood. It’s something that we love,” Pugliese said. “We have a stronger focus on grab-and-go items.”
Menu highlights include breakfast sandwiches, deli sandwiches and salads, lobster rolls, and a lobster cobb salad that Pugliese said is already popular among visitors looking for their lobster fix.
Although KPort Provisions has made many changes, General Manager Christopher Duprey said the store has been received well so far.
“Most of the responses have been positive,” Duprey said.

The Kennebunk community has always been warm and inviting, Pugliese said, and KPort Provisions plans to take advice from locals whenever possible.
“We’re really happy with the response that we’ve gotten,” Pugliese said. “Everyone has been receptive so far.”
Neither George W. Bush or Patrick Dempsey have yet to make an appearance, but as summer approaches, Pugliese looks forward to a possible visit from the local celebrities.
“We get excited when they visit us,” Pugliese said.
