The town of Cape Elizabeth announced recently that a three-and-a-half-year restoration project on Portland Head Light at Fort Williams is finally complete.
In that span, the iconic and historic lighthouse has had new windows and a new roof installed, a complete exterior repaint, and an updated AC unit and HVAC system.
The museum inside the lighthouse has also seen enhancements, including new carpeting, which addressed damage to the first floor after it flooded during a storm last winter.
“We know how much this lighthouse means to the people of Cape Elizabeth and beyond,” said Dave Bagdasarian, the town’s facilities director, in a post on the town’s website. “It’s more than just a building — it’s a symbol. Restoring it has been one of the most rewarding projects I’ve been a part of, and it feels great to have it looking as good as it should.”
The town has developed a routine maintenance plan, such as regular painting.
“This provocative approach will help preserve its iconic appearance for generations to come,” the town in its post.
