Another school year is wrapping up, and we at the Brunswick School Department must bid adieu to the Class of 2025.
Graduation celebrates the end of one era and the transition to another. The day is filled with excitement, nostalgia, hope and a bit of sadness at the end of a 12-year journey on the education highway.
In addition to celebrating a significant milestone, a graduation ceremony also reminds us to focus on something fundamental to a meaningful life: gratitude.
Genuine gratitude, appreciation and humility boast transformative powers that researchers tell us rewire the brain to bring greater happiness and resilience. As I reflect on the past four years, I am profoundly grateful to many people connected with the Brunswick Class of 2025.
First, I am grateful for our parents and families, who truly are the unsung heroes who navigated the turbulent waters of adolescence with unwavering support. They were true partners with us and encouraged the students in their lives to aim high and work toward their goals. Our parents, families and student supporters have been our graduates’ compass, safety net and biggest champions.
Our teachers and staff at BSD have been mentors, guides and even the voice of reason at times. They are skilled in the delicate art of challenging our students’ brilliant minds while nurturing their unique talents. Their dedication deserves recognition and gratitude far beyond what words can express.
I am extremely grateful for our wonderful Brunswick community. From cheering on athletes and performers to creating a welcoming and nurturing environment in our beloved town, the citizens of Brunswick set the standard for other municipalities to follow.
Finally, I have profound and deep admiration and gratitude for the Class of 2025 for giving their best for four years. I will truly miss the smiles in the hallway, the enthusiasm and the determination of these amazing students to make a difference. It is with immense pride and humility that I watch these students begin the next part of their life’s journey. Another reason why I am particularly fond of the Class of 2025 is because they were part of the inaugural Superintendents’ Student Advisory Council. Two members of the Class of 2025 have been members of my council for five years, and I’m thankful for them sharing their thoughts and opinions with me. They will be missed.
Many graduates are heading to college or trade school. Others are moving directly into the workforce. Some have chosen to serve in the military. Regardless of the path taken, I know our new graduates carry with them the steadfast love and support of the entire Brunswick community.
While gratitude was the cornerstone of my message for our departing seniors this year, it’s a reminder for all of us that practicing gratitude daily provides numerous benefits for mental and physical well-being. It’s something we all could benefit from, whether keeping a daily journal or simply noting a moment each day that makes you thankful. Being grateful helps us notice the positives that happen each day, reminds us what is truly important and encourages us to live in the present moment — good lessons for all of us, whether we are starting a new phase of life after high school or simply looking forward to the next day.
