CAPE ELIZABETH — As the sun came out Saturday, the Cape Elizabeth boys lacrosse team’s offense heated up.
Cape Elizabeth and Brunswick were tied at 4 heading into the fourth quarter. As thick fog began to lift, the Capers found their sense of urgency, dominated possession, and scored three unanswered goals to earn a 7-4 win.
“I don’t know if we really had to say anything,” Cape Elizabeth coach Ben Raymond said. “It was just making sure that we continue to do the things that were working out well and shooting a little bit better. Our offense had plenty of possessions. I think we had plenty. I’m sure we had more offensive possession than they did, (same with) time of possession. We just needed to make sure we did a better job of converting our opportunities in the second half.”
Seven different players scored for Cape. Brunswick senior midfielder Finn White had a goal and two assists, and there others chipped in with a goal.
Luke Gagne stopped 13 shots for the Capers (6-7), while Brady Marzakis made 11 saves for the Dragons (7-5).
How it happened
• Saturday’s game was moved from Brunswick’s grass field to Cape Elizabeth’s turf field because of a forecast of heavy rain. The downpour stopped after the JV game ended, but the first half of the varsity game was played in thick fog.
Peter Wilkoff put Brunswick ahead 89 seconds into the game, with an assist from White. The Capers tied it midway through the quarter on a man-up goal by freshman attacker Cam Scott, then senior attacker Brady Hanisko gave them a 2-1 lead with a goal at the buzzer.
• Brunswick did not have many possessions in the first half, but the Dragons were fairly efficient. Midfielder Noah Similien scored from Gabriel Shoemaker at 8:35 of the second quarter, and White set up Avery Tatham on a man-up possession at 4:36 to give Brunswick a 3-2 lead. Fifty seconds later, Cape Elizabeth’s Alex Mainville evened it up.
• White scored the first goal of the second half, off a pass from sophomore attacker Michael Shoemaker with 9:11 left in the third, but Brunswick didn’t score again. Cape Elizabeth midfielder Harry Converse tied it midway through the third quarter, and with just under nine minutes left in the game, Nathan Hanisko broke the tie. Josie Sparks converted a rebound with 2:11 left, and Bennett Hooper made it 7-4 with 31.7 seconds remaining.
Notable quotes
• “(Luke Gagne) was outstanding. I mean, he did a great job, made a ton of saves, and as much as that, his ability to clear really helped us out.” — Cape Elizabeth coach Ben Raymond
• “When we execute, we can play with the teams that we’re trying to compete with. So that’s pretty much just that we hung around. It was never more than a one-goal game until the last five minutes, six minutes, and that’s kind of what we’re looking for, no matter what, one way or the other.” — Brunswick coach Ben Herman
