William Edward Allen
HONDURAS – William Edward Allen, affectionately known as “Bill” or “Bingy,” passed away unexpectedly on March 12, 2025, while on vacation in Roatan, Honduras, with his beloved wife, Joanne. He was 79 years old.
Along with his parents, Bill is reunited in passing with his siblings, Elizabeth Mabo, George Allen, Linda Flynn, and Marie Rondeau.
Born on March 16, 1945, in Medford, Mass., Bill was the son of the late George Allen and Estelle (Mariska) Allen. From a young age, Bill developed a deep love for the sea – a passion that remained a constant throughout his life. He often shared fond stories of growing up around the water, where many of his early adventures began.
After graduating from high school, Bill proudly served in the United States Coast Guard. His civil service career took him and his family to Bermuda and Alaska before eventually settling in Maine – always close to the ocean he loved so dearly. Following his retirement from a distinguished civil service career, Bill dedicated his time to restoring his pride and joy, the lobster boat, Ruth-E. For Bill, the ocean wasn’t just a place of work – it was a gateway to friendship, community, and peace.
A proud veteran, Bill was deeply committed to supporting fellow service members. He was a familiar face in the Harpswell Veterans Day parade and often helped other veterans navigate the benefits process. As Maine’s winters grew harsher, Bill and his wife Ruth began spending their winters in Florida. Each year, they would make the drive south, reconnecting with cherished friends like Helen and JW along the way.
After Ruth’s passing, Bill found companionship again in Joanne. Their bond grew through heartfelt emails and mutual support, and in time, their friendship blossomed into love. Bill and Joanne were married in October of 2021. Through Joanne, Bill joyfully welcomed her granddaughter, Miss Lexie Rose, into his life, quickly becoming her beloved “Papa.”
Together, Bill and Joanne embraced every moment. They bought a boat, took spontaneous trips, cruised in the winters, and made memories at their winter home in Zephyrhills, Fla. Bill enjoyed dancing, reading, attending shows, and was active in the local community – especially known for his love of cribbage and his leadership in a weekly writing class. He also continued his advocacy work, helping veterans both in Florida and in Maine.
Bill had a contagious sense of humor, a generous spirit, and an undeniable zest for life. He made it his mission to bring joy to others – whether with a joke, a smile, or a helping hand. Always by his side was his loyal dog, Buddy, who brought him endless joy and companionship.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Joanne Marie Allen, of Harpswell. He is also lovingly remembered by his former wife, Sandra Allen, mother of his sons Scott Allen and wife Constance of Bowdoinham, and Glenn Allen and wife Karie of Marysville, Wash. Through Joanne, he is survived by sons Michael Jr., Jonathan, daughter-in-law Jessica Langley; and grandchildren Michael III, Emma, and Lexie Rose Langley.
He is also survived by his adopted son, Donald Martin of Lagrange; grandchildren Corey Allen of Harpswell, and Ethian, Alex, Aden, and AJ Allen of Marysville, Wash.; and his sisters Jeanette Cooper and Estelle Corrigan.
Bill’s legacy lives on through his beloved nieces and their families, Debbie and Steve Low of Laconia, N.H., Sandy and Kerry Burnell of North Yarmouth, and Cindy and Rick Young of North Yarmouth. He is also remembered by many great-nieces and nephews; extended family; and the many friends who loved him dearly.
Bill lived his life on his own terms – with love, laughter, and endless curiosity. He will be remembered always and missed beyond measure.
A celebration of life will be held June 14, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the home of Bill and Joanne, 74 Lookout Pt. Road, Harpswell. Bring your stories to share, your drink of choice, finger food will be shared as well. Let’s celebrate the Bill we all knew and loved. Bill will smile upon us all.
