Sylvan Gallery in Wiscasset recently added Roberta Goschke to its lineup of contemporary New England fine artists. This acclaimed Maine artist is a seasoned plein air painter whose work combines impressionistic color and expressive brushwork with realistic structure, often depicting the light and atmosphere of Maine’s working harbors, rocky coastal views, rural landscape and many local homes and historic buildings.
Goschke uses direct observation to capture the fleeting moods of Maine’s natural world, usually completing paintings in a single session to preserve the spontaneity and immediacy of the moment. Also on view are Goschke’s remarkable still lifes, celebrating the arrival of spring flowers.

Paintings of two well-known Maine sailing vessels on view include “Angelique at the Dock” (Camden) and “Trade Wind Afternoon” (Rockport). Goschke paints them in a spontaneous, impressionistic manner; capturing summer’s glistening light and the bright colors of the scene in “Angelique at the Dock,” whereas “Trade Wind Afternoon” is more of a study of contrasts.
For gallery goers who delight in spring bouquets, Goschke’s floral still life paintings will keep flowers blooming in their homes year-round. “Flora’s Tulips,” at 16-by-20 inches, is her largest floral painting on view. It’s a beautifully composed, loosely arranged painting of French tulips. Goschke’s ability to capture the intrinsic nature of flowers is conveyed in her other floral still lifes, including “Swallows and Daffodils,” “Pansies in a Bud Vase” and “Gold Cup and Daffodils.”

Goschke was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Her drawing interest began in childhood and continued through high school and a 20-year U.S. Army career. During her military service, she also attended the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia. Goschke began life drawing sessions there in 1984 and continues this essential practice into the present. She brings the same passion for figure drawing to painting the landscape, water, boats and harbors, and still life, using all subjects as endless challenges of decision-making and careful observation of mood and atmosphere.
Since relocating to Waldoboro, Maine, in 2000, Goschke has immersed herself in the region’s natural beauty through plein air painting. Her artwork has been included in numerous exhibitions in Maine, Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland, and is in many private collections, including that of Sen. Angus King.
