LEWISTON — A 4-year-old who died of a gunshot wound inside his Pierce Street home on Saturday was shot with a 9 mm pistol owned by his stepfather, police said Wednesday night.
The gun was registered to Robert McCoy, 36, who lives with the child and his mother at 93 Pierce St., police said. It was the only firearm found at the scene.
Police did not provide any further information about the shooting other than to repeat that 4-year-old Jasper Smith died of a gunshot wound to the head.
The boy is known locally as Jasper Kyle McCoy, according to those who know the family. Police listed the child as Jasper Smith.
The shooting occurred at about 5 a.m. Saturday, police said. The boy died roughly two hours later at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
No charges have been filed in the case, although police stress that it remains under investigation.
Maine State Police said that several people were at home inside the residence when emergency crews first responded. Jasper lived with his stepfather and mother, Mikayla McCoy, at the residence. Two other children, 2 years and 6 months old, were also living in the house at the time of the shooting.
