Repairs are underway at Prouts Neck in Scarborough to remedy erosion and other damage from the winter storms in January 2024.

Black Point Road closed between Bird Nest and Sanctuary lanes Friday and is scheduled to stay shut through June 13. The area will be available to residents only.

“If you don’t live or work in this area, we ask that you avoid the area until this project is complete,” Scarborough’s public safety departments said in an announcement Friday. “Due to safety considerations, the Black Point Road construction area itself will be completely off limits to all pedestrian and bicycle traffic until further notice.”

The project was estimated to cost $4 million last year, with the Federal Emergency Management Agency set to reimburse all costs. The money will go toward reconstructing a stone revetment wall and embankment and along with nearly 500 feet of Black Point Road, including the installation of new drainage piping. The work will also replace a steel guardrail that is no longer staked into the ground due to erosion.

The trails at Prouts Neck have also been damaged, and the Prouts Neck Association has been working with the town on ways to remedy them as well.

“We understand there will be some inconvenience with this project,” the announcement states. “The contractor is confident the work will progress quickly and will achieve substantial completion prior to the official start of the Prouts Neck summer season.”
