The Maine School Administrative District 6 School Board next week will weigh a proposed $69.5 million spending plan for the fiscal year beginning July 1.
Superintendent Clay Gleason earlier this month submitted the budget, up from $66.1 million for the current year. The numbers represent a $3.35 million increase, or 5.07% hike.
“Two consecutive years of 12% increases in health insurance is the largest, single factor,” Gleason said in an email. “Due to the fact that we employ over 700 people, this increase amounts to approximately $2 million over two years.”
Gleason said the district would “unpack other small, cumulative increases” that are contributing factors with the SAD 6 School Board next week. The 11-member board will scrutinize the budget in a special meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 28, at its central office, with the possibility of a continuance on April 29.
The state’s subsidy to the district is projected to rise to $26.3 million from $24.7 million, representing a boost of $1.6 million.
So, the collective assessment amount to the district’s five towns to support education would be $37.8 million, up $1.9 million from $35.8 million.
The Buxton assessment to pay for education would rise to $10.7 million, up $473,946 from $10.2 million, or 4.6%; Frye Island, a summer community with no children in the district’s schools, would pay $2.1 million, up $93,699 from about $2 million, an increase of 4.63%; Hollis, $6.3 million, up $354,401 from $6 million, 5.9%; Limington, $4.7 million, up $264,885, or 6%; and Standish, $13.9 million, up $749,441 from $13.2 million, or 5.75%.
Buxton’s tax rate, according to SAD 6 figures for example, would go from $10.99 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation to $11.39, representing about a 40-cent jump, or 3.64% increase. It means taxes on a Buxton home assessed at $400,000 would rise from $4,396 to $4,556, or up $160.
The school district, with towns in Cumberland and York counties, has a central office at 94 Main St. in Buxton. The large geographical district covers 182 square miles and school buses travel 5,300 miles daily, according to the SAD 6 website.
The district has an enrollment of about 3,300 students in eight schools.
The SAD 6 proposed budget can be viewed on its Facebook page and next week’s meeting will be livestreamed on Saco River Community Television. The district’s central office can be reached by calling 929-3831.
The annual district-wide meeting for a citizens’ vote on the budget is set for 6 p.m. on May 15 before going to the budget validation referendum on Election Day, June 10.
