Annual cleanup

Gorham Conservation Commission is collaborating with the Village Alliance and Think Blue Maine for the fifth annual town cleanup, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 27.

All ages are invited to pick up trash in the village, along New Portland Road and South Street near catch basins.

Gorham Volunteers in Police Service will help with traffic safety and the Conservation Commission will provide supplies.

The event will start at the Municipal Center, 75 South St., and donations will be collected for the Gorham Food Pantry.

Free bicycle safety rodeo

Gorham Recreation Department and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine are sponsoring a bicycle safety rodeo from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, in the parking lot at Gorham Middle School, 106 Weeks Road. The rodeo is for children ages 3 to 11.

The rodeo, according to an announcement, will include a helmet check, bike mechanical check and a chance to ride in a closed traffic skills course that teach the rules of the road.

A raffle and giveaways for participants will include bike helmets and other prizes.

50 years ago

The American Journal reported on April 9, 1975, that Don Henry, king of Gorham Lions, had handed four petitions to Maine Sen. Linwood Graffam in support of the proposed returnable bottle law.

U.S. taxpayers’ debt

The U.S. Treasury Department reported on April 3 that the U.S. public debt was $36,216,495,027,787.96.
