A fire caused by burning debris charred more than 45 acres of land in Mapleton on Saturday, the Maine Forest Service said.

While no injuries were reported, the blaze threatened three structures after being sparked by debris that escaped a controlled burn, forest service rangers said in a post on social media.

Rangers put out the blaze alongside the Mapleton Fire Department, they said.

Maine is coming off a relatively dry winter, but drought conditions have softened for most of Aroostook County, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Temperature oscillations also melted much of the snowpack the state saw earlier than expected.

“Early melting of the snowpack this year has led to fields becoming available to burn much earlier than normal. Be careful with all out-of-door fires,” forest rangers said in another post, which followed a nearly 4-acre fire in Fort Fairfield Wednesday.

The forest service urged people to seek burn permits before setting any fires.

Mapleton is a town of about 1,900 people west of Presque Isle in Aroostook County.
