KENNEBUNK – Sally Jo (Plummer) Keene, 77, a resident of Kennebunk, formerly of Nashua, N.H. and Gardner, Mass., passed away Monday Morning, March 31, 2025, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House following a brief illness.
Sally was born Nov. 11, 1947, in Springfield Mass., the daughter of Charles and Joan Webber Plummer, grew up in Princeton N.J. and at her family cottage near Wells Beach, and has an undergraduate degree from Springfield College in Fine Arts. Over the course of her life, she also earned her master’s degree from Fitchburg State in special education teaching.
Her young career goals were to be a teacher or a nurse, and she began work as a teacher in the Gardner School System. She then joined General Electric Co as a systems analyst and in high-level software development. Moving to Maine following the death of her father to assist in the care of her mother, she earned her degree to become an LPN, working in geriatric nursing with Kennebunk Nursing Center, retiring in 2001.
With her formative years spent in the Wells Beach area, Sally grew to love the ocean and sailing, and teaching those she loved the skills to man a sailboat. She also enjoyed painting, gardening, searching for crabs with her grandchildren, and being an active member of First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunk.
She was predeceased by her son, Stefan Keene, who died in 2001, and her Uncle Buddy with whom she had a close relationship.
Survivors include her loving husband, Herve’ Lavoie, of Kennebunk. She has three siblings, Richard Plummer, Westborough, Mass., Martha Latorre, St. Louis, Miss., and Deborah Twomey, Stony Point, N.C. She also leaves a son, Ryan Keene. Herve’s children are Brigitte Flick and Kristina Gemborys. With spouses, this includes eight grandchildren, Max and Jake Foley-Keene, Morgan and Tellie Keene, Lindsey and Hayden Flick, and Logan and Cole Gemborys.
A memorial service to celebrate Sally’s full and incredible life will be held later in the spring and announced by Bibber Memorial Chapel.
