George Allen Moran

PORTLAND – Our world became a little less bright with the peaceful passing of George Allen Moran, 90, on the morning of March 19, 2025, at the Barron Center in Portland.

Born in Presque Isle in 1934 to John and Lucille Moran, George was raised on a potato farm where many adventures awaited him. His favorite times were spent milking cows, playing in the hayloft, haying, cutting the grain and getting into various mischief and squabbles with his beloved siblings.

A graduate of Presque Isle High School, George attended the Aroostook State Teachers’ College (now UMPI) in Presque Isle where played four years of basketball there, two as co-captain of the team. It was at college where George met his wife, Marilyn. They were wed in 1955 and soon after, signed contracts to teach in the Caribou school system where they both devoted their careers. George taught middle school math and science for 33 years and coached basketball for 38 years.

As a coach and teacher, George’s kindness and gentle wit endeared himself to his charges, who appreciated his gift for both witty quips and wise adages. He could teach you how to be an outstanding shooter or student while making you want to strive for your personal best in life. Whether you knew him as “Mr. Moran” or “Coach” or just “George,” you were a better person for knowing him.

His family was a source of strength and pride for George. To his children, he was a hero. As a devoted father and husband, he freely gave his time and love, and his fierce loyalty and gentle guidance were a constant presence. George was never happier than when he was surrounded by family.

George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marilyn; his parents, John and Lucille; sisters Ruby, Maxine, and Patty, and a brother, Kenny.

He is survived by his son, Kirk Moran and daughter-in-law Amy of Saco, his daughter, Lori Moran Gunn and son-in-law John Gunn of Norway; granddaughters Mikayla Moran of Saco and Karsha Gunn of Norway, both of whom he loved dearly; brother, John, sisters Joan, Carol, Marilyn and Dianne; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life for George will be held on Thursday, April 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Chad Poitras Funeral Home, 498 Long Plains Rd., in Buxton.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to George’s second family, the nursing staff in the Zolov unit at the Barron Center.
