SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Mary Louise Wellington Tyler, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away last year on March 16, 2024, with all five of her children near.
Born in Portland, 1934, she was a kind and vibrant soul who cherished her family and brought joy and fun to all who knew her. As a dedicated grandmother, she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and making them laugh with her poems, funny letters and frequent visits.
Mary Lou was predeceased by her parents, Joel (Duke) Foster Wellington M.D., and Bertha (Mimi) Wellington.
She is survived by her loving children, Tammy (John) Newman, David (Kathy) Tyler, Leslie (Steve) Stanaback, Karen (Eric) Boelts, James (Michelle) Tyler; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; and her former spouse William Knox Tyler.
Mary Lou, grew up on Brighton Avenue in Portland and graduated Waynflete School in 1952. She then graduated University of Denver. She founded Friends of the Retarded, located on Fore Street in Portland, providing meaningful work and a place to gather. For her work, she was recognized as Outstanding Young Women of America – 1968.
Her love for skiing, tennis, golf, kept her very active, and participating in local Senior Olympics. She lived in Cape Elizabeth, Scottsdale, Ariz. and Laguna Woods, Calif.
Mary Lou will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
