The recently completed winter sports season was one of triumph and drama and fittingly, many local athletes were honored for their efforts by being named to postseason all-star teams.
Here’s how it shook out:
Boys basketball

Falmouth’s boys basketball team captured the Class A state title in unforgettable fashion and the Navigators placed Billy Birks and state game hero Davis Mann on the Southwestern Maine Activities Association’s Class A South all-star first-team.
Birks and Mann were also named to the SMAA Class A South All-Defensive team.
Falmouth’s Jaxon Cameron was an honorable mention selection.
In Class AA South, Manny Hidalgo of state runner-up South Portland, along with Deering’s Evan Legassey and Scarborough’s Carter Blanche and Adam Fitzgerald, were first-team selections.
Deering’s Tayshaun Cleveland and South Portland’s Gabe Jackson made the second-team.
South Portland’s Darius Johnson and Tom Maloji were named honorable mentions.
Deering’s Tavian Lauture and South Portland’s Tom Maloji made the SMAA All-Defensive team.
In Class AA North, Cheverus’ Leo McNabb was named Player of the Year.
McNabb also made the first-team, along with Portland’s Lucas LeGage.
Cheverus’ Jameson Fitzpatrick and Portland’s Loic Ramazani were named to the second-team.
Portland’s Ramazani and Cheverus’ Sammy Nzeyimana made the All-Defensive team.
Cheverus’ A.J. Lauture and Portland’s Maddox Meas were named to the All-Rookie team.
Cheverus’ Aaron Goodman and Leo McNabb, Deering’s Khalid Mahamed, Falmouth’s Jaxon Cameron, David Gravier, Davis Mann, Declan O’Brien, Luka Roediger, Nick Roediger and Robert Soucy, Portland’s Cedar Conley and Devin Walker and South Portland’s Addison Blais and Carmine Soucy qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.
The Western Maine Conference Class A/B first-team featured Freeport’s Conner Smith and Greely’s Kade Ippolito.
Cape Elizabeth’s Eli Smith and Yarmouth’s Ian Lawrence were named to the second-team.
Greely’s Owen Partridge made the third-team.
Waynflete’s JJ Carlo was named to the WMC Class C/D first-team.
Waynflete’s Jed Alsup made the second-team.
Greely’s Ippolito and Partridge, along with Freeport’s Alex Berry, made the WMC Class A/B All-Defensive first-team.
Yarmouth’s Bobby Wolff was named to the All-Defensive second-team.
Waynflete’s JJ Carlo made the WMC Class C All-Defensive first-team.
Freeport’s Conner Smith was a finalist for the Bob Butler Award.
Cape Elizabeth’s Eli Morse and Freeport’s Bryce Dwyer and Conner Smith qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.
Cape Elizabeth’s Eli Smith, Freeport’s Conner Smith, Greely’s Kade Ippolito and Owen Partridge and Yarmouth’s Bobby Wolff competed in the WMC Senior All-Star Game.
Greely’s Travis Seaver served as a coach in the Senior All-Star Game.
Cheverus’ Leo McNabb, Deering’s Evan Legassey, Falmouth’s Davis Mann and South Portland’s Manny Hidalgo took part in the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Game.
Cheverus’ Leo McNabb and South Portland’s Manny Hidalgo were semifinalists for the Mister Maine Basketball award.
Girls basketball

On the girls’ side, Emma Travis and Annie Whitmore of Class AA state champion South Portland, along with Scarborough’s Emerson Flaker, made the SMAA Class AA South first-team.
South Portland’s Caleigh Corcoran and Destiny Peter were named to the second-team.
Scarborough’s Eva Alvarez was an honorable mention and made the SMAA All-Rookie team.
Scarborough’s Emerson Flaker and South Portland’s Emma Travis and Annie Whitmore were selected for the All-Defensive team.
Flaker was named the SMAA Defensive Player of the Year.
South Portland’s Brianne Maloney was chosen the Class AA South Coach of the Year.
In Class AA North, Cheverus standout Kylie Lamson made the first-team.
Cheverus’ Addison Jordan and Portland’s Baleria Yugu were named to the second-team.
Cheverus’ Rachel Feeley and Portland’s Kiley McCrum made the All-Defensive team.
Portland’s Lawino Bendasta and Fasika West made the All-Rookie squad.
In Class A South, Deering’s Angelina Keo was an honorable mention.
Deering’s Blake Gayle and Rejoyce Kamanda were named to the All-Defensive team.
Falmouth’s Siobhan Nielsen made the All-Rookie team.

Freeport’s Sydney Gelhar was named to the WMC Class A/B All-Defensive first-team.
Greely’s Kelsey Crocker and Molly Partridge made the second-team.
In Class C/D, NYA’s Ella Giguere made the first-team.
NYA’s Athena Gee and Waynflete’s Lauren McNutt-Girouard were named to the second-team.
NYA’s Ella Giguere also made the WMC Class C/D All-Defensive team.
The WMC All-Academic team included Cape Elizabeth’s Mei Martinez, Freeport’s Maddie Cormier and Eydie Kaplan, NYA’s Delia Fontana, Athena Gee, Ella Giguere and Emily Robbins and Waynflete’s Lydia Birknes and Fallon Culley.
Portland’s Baleria Yugu, Scarborough’s Emerson Flaker and South Portland’s Emma Travis took part in the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Game.
Boys hockey

Several local hockey players took part in the Senior All-Star games.
The Class A team featured Falmouth’s Rowan Hinkley, Isaac Laliberte, Jack Turgeon, Brandon White and Henry Whiting and was coached by Falmouth’s Hogan Tracy.
The Class B South squad included Brayden Fitch, Brady Martin, Quinn McCoy and Owen Walsh of repeat state champion Cheverus/Yarmouth, along with Cape Elizabeth’s Brady Hanisko and Nathan Hanisko and Greely’s Rylan Haight. Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Dave St. Pierre served as coach, with help from assistant Barry Mothes of Greely.
The Class B South all-star first-team included Owen Cheever and Quinn McCoy of state champion Cheverus/Yarmouth, along with Cape Elizabeth’s Nathan Hanisko.
Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Colby Carnes was named to the second-team.
Cape Elizabeth’s Brady Hanisko and Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Ethan Tucker made the third-team.
Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Hakon Yao was an honorable mention selection.
Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Griffin Zinman and Greely’s Mitchell Lambert made the Class B South All-Rookie team.
Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Owen Cheever was named Class B South Defensman of the Year.
Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Ethan Tucker was chosen Class B South Goaltender of the Year.
Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Dave St. Pierre joined Gorham’s Shawn Sullivan as Class B South Coach of the Year.
Cape Elizabeth’s Brady Hanisko was given the Evans Spear Award, as the senior who best displayed character, spirit and outstanding play.
Girls hockey

Cheverus’ girls hockey team, the three-time state champion, placed Lucy Johnson, Zoey Radford, Caroline Rousseau and Ellie Skolnekovich on the All-State team. They were joined by Yarmouth/Freeport’s Erica O’Connor, Adelaide Strout and Celia Zinman, along with Marina Bassett, Jane Flynn and Libby Hooper of the Portland/South Portland/Cape Elizabeth/Deering/Waynflete Beacons co-op squad.
The South Region all-star team included Cheverus’ Anna Bowie, Ashley Cloutier, Briella Doherty, Taylor Lucas and Grace Townsend, Falmouth/Scarborough’s Amelia Brann, Audrey Farnham and Hope Melevsky, Hartson Mosunic and Alexis Turner of the Beacons, and Greely’s Charlie Louie and Zoe Trepaney.
The North Region all-star team featured Yarmouth/Freeport’s Maya Nasveschuk and Maya White.
Marina Bassett of the Beacons was given the Becky Schaffer Award as the state’s top senior player. Teammate Jane Flynn and Cheverus’ Lucy Johnson were finalists. Libby Hooper of the Beacons and Cheverus’ Zoey Radford were semifinalists.
Boys indoor track

On the track, in the SMAA, Atticus Merriam (junior 800), Nate Murray (senior shot put), Ethan Keller (mile and two-mile), Wyatt Martin (shot put) and the 4×800 relay team (Baxter Merriam, Atticus Merriam, Landen Springer and Ethan Keller) of Class A champion Scarborough made the first-team, along with Deering’s Nathan Foley (junior long jump), Jordis Mugisha (junior triple jump) and the Rams’ junior relay team (Foley, Abdulkadir Munye, Alfonso De Jesus and Samuel Almeida), Falmouth’s Max Shapiro (senior 200), Portland’s Charlie Jacques (senior 800) and the Bulldogs’ 4×400 relay team and South Portland’s Devin Berry (junior hurdles), Jared LaRose (junior long jump) and Arnaud Sioho (senior hurdles, senior long jump and senior triple jump).
The second-team featured Deering’s Nathan Foley (junior triple jump), Abdulkadir Munye (junior hurdles) and Ellis Wood (mile), Falmouth’s Ali Carter (senior 200), William Davis (junior high jump) and Max Shapiro (senior 55), Portland’s Charlie Jacques (600) and Aran Johnson (two-mile), Scarborough’s Ethan Keller (senior 800) and Papa Osei (junior 55) and South Portland’s Tyler Bryant (senior high jump) and Chris Salamone (junior long jump).

Greely won the Class B state title and placed Sam Anania (pole vault), Bez Mendelsohn (senior 400), Alex Mendoza (long jump and triple jump) and Holden Pierce (junior 200) on the WMC first-team, along with Cape Elizabeth’s Javi Angie-Sutherland (junior 55) and Quentin Lombard (junior high jump) and Yarmouth’s Ethan Hoffman (shot put) and Tyler Vogel (shot put).
Second-team selections included Freeport’s Ezra Solis (200) and Brady Webber (high jump), Greely’s Owen Partridge (400), Liam Coull (800), Liam Magoon (pole vault) and Jackson Walton (long jump) and Yarmouth’s Abd Muayad (shot put).
Greely’s Holden Pierce was named the WMC Track Junior Division MVP.
Yarmouth’s Tyler Vogel was chosen the WMC Field Junior Division MVP.
Yarmouth’s Ethan Hoffman was named the WMC Field Senior Division MVP.
Cape Elizabeth’s Vollie Weiss qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.
Girls indoor track

On the girls’ side, Class B state champion Greely placed Jacqueline Franklin (senior 400), Rowan Barry (800), Katie Spencer (pole vault) and Victoria Zandan (long jump, triple jump and junior 55 hurdles) on the WMC first-team, along with Cape Elizabeth’s Sloan Gardner (senior shot put), Reagan Gajan (junior high jump), Freeport’s Emma Graham (junior 400) and Lilah Hall (two-mile) and Yarmouth’s Tessa Dougherty (senior high jump), Miah Jacobs (senior 55) and Abby Noble (senior 200).
Second-teamers included Freeport’s Kessa Benner (pole vault), Claire Ramus (55 hurdles) and Lucy Riggs (400), Greely’s Rowan Barry (mile and two-mile) and Yarmouth’s Linnea Herring (shot put).
Greely’s Rowan Barry was named the WMC Track Senior Division MVP.
Greely’s Victoria Zandan was selected the WMC Field Junior Division MVP.
Cape Elizabeth’s Sloan Gardner was chosen the WMC Field Senior Division MVP.
Freeport’s Kessa Benner, Celia Cobb, Mia Levesque, Lucy Riggs and Josie Spaulding qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.
In the SMAA, Cheverus’ Paige Alexander (junior 800) and the Stags’ sprint medley relay team, Falmouth’s Hadley Perry (junior hurdles) and the Navigators’ 4×800 relay team (Maeve Ginevan, Georgia Moon, Sara Tennent and Emory Westburg), Portland’s Alisandro Lindos (senior triple jump), Samantha Moore (600, mile, senior 400 and senior 800) and the Bulldogs’ 4×400 relay team and Scarborough’s Vera DiSotto (junior shot put) and Isabella Harmon (pole vault) qualified for the first-team.
The second-team featured Cheverus’ Paige Alexander (two-mile), Stella Hang (senior long jump), Alaina Holmes (senior 55 and senior 200) and Dylan Walker (junior high jump), Falmouth’s Georgia Moon (600, junior 400 and junior 800) and Hadley Perry (junior 200), Portland’s Anneliese Collin (senior hurdles), Scarborough’s Caroline Benson (pole vault), Laurel Driscoll (senior 800 and mile) and Isabella Harmon (senior high jump) and South Portland’s Maegan Berry (junior 55), Makayla Edward-Burwell (senior shot put) and Annalise Soucy (junior triple jump)

Boys swimming

In the pool, Falmouth’s boys team won its first state championship in over four decades and placed Logan McVeigh (diving), Malcolm Sprague (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, medley relay, 200 free relay), and Carter VerLee (100 free, 200 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay) on the Southwestern all-star team. They were joined by Cape Elizabeth’s Graham Plourde (100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, medley relay and 400 free relay), Tiger McCormick (50 free, 100 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay), Nick Eremita (diving), Will Green (diving), Will Harmon (200 free and 500 free) and Spencer Shaw (200 IM, 100 backstroke and medley relay), Cheverus’ Peter Jones (medley relay and 200 free relay), Deering/Portland’s Andy Marvin (50 free, 100 free, medley relay and 400 free relay), Greely’s Ike Barr (100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and medley relay), Reid Petrie (100 butterfly, 200 free, medley relay and 400 free relay), Mason Rodgers (200 free relay), Wesley Crossman (100 fly and medley relay) and Alex Wall (100 backstroke and 400 free relay), Scarborough’s Stephen Ranger (200 free relay), South Portland’s Gavin Olsen (400 free relay) and Yarmouth’s Henry Keepes (200 free relay).

The SMAA All-Academic team included Falmouth’s Sean Lowery, Logan McVeigh, Elliott Resnick and Luka Topalovic, Scarborough’s Camden Zsiga and South Portland’s Gavin Olsen.
The boys’ all-state team featured Cape Elizabeth’s Graham Plourde (medley relay, 200 IM, 100 breaststroke) and Tiger McCormick (200 free relay), Deering/Portland’s Andy Marvin (100 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay), Falmouth’s Logan McVeigh (diving), Malcolm Sprague (50 free, medley relay and 200 free relay) and Carter VerLee (100 free, 200 free and 400 free relay) and Greely’s Ike Barr (100 breaststroke and medley relay) and Reid Petrie (200 free, 100 fly and medley relay).
Girls swimming

The Deering/Portland girls repeated as Class A champion and placed Amelia MacDonald (500 free) on the Southwestern all-star team. She was joined by Cape Elizabeth’s Audrey Alberts (200 free, 100 fly, medley relay and 200 free relay), Dove Brown (50 free, medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay), Emmerson Gammon (100 fly, 500 free), Lucy Shaw (200 IM, 100 fly, medley relay and 400 free relay) and Hope Taylor (200 free, 500 free and 400 free relay), Cheverus’ Kate Prestes (diving), Falmouth’s Katie Gorsuch (50 free, 100 free, medley relay and 200 free relay), Jillian James (diving) and Sofia Pride (200 free relay), South Portland’s Ali Maksimova (50 free, 100 backstroke, medley relay and 200 free relay), Kiara Bradford (diving) and Lola Strom (400 free relay), Waynflete’s Kestrel Linehan (100 free, 100 backstroke, medley relay and 400 free relay) and Yarmouth’s Charlotte Lachance (200 free relay and 400 free relay).
Cape Elizabeth’s Lucy Shaw and Hope Taylor qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.
The SMAA All-Academic team included Deering’s Sabella Figdor, Sophia Harrod-Kim and Anya Heiden, Falmouth’s Jillian James and Sofia Pride and Scarborough’s Emerson Johnson.
The girls’ All-State team included Cape Elizabeth’s Audrey Alberts (100 fly and medley relay), Dove Brown (200 free relay), Lucy Shaw (200 IM and 400 free relay) and Hope Taylor (200 free, 500 free and 400 free relay), Falmouth’s Katie Gorsuch (50 free, medley relay and 400 free relay) and Jillian James (diving) and South Portland’s Ali Maksimova (200 free relay).
Skiing

Falmouth’s powerhouse Alpine ski program made quite an impact on the SMAA all-star team.
The Navigators boys placed slalom and giant slalom league champion Ian Christie, along with Hayden Davis, Liam Keefer, Blake Kingsley, Zack Small and Jackson Thombs, on the squad.
The SMAA girls’ Alpine all-conference team featured Falmouth’s Margo Hesson, the league’s GS champion, along with teammates Lulu Cushman, Bridget Jacobsen and Ella Morse and Scarborough’s Clara Ferrie (the league’s slalom champion), Lilah Ferrie and Madison Baily.
Falmouth’s Sadie Kramer qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.
In the WMC, the boys’ Alpine all-star team included Cape Elizabeth’s Porter Monson, Freeport’s Ben Barrett, Elias Burrill and Ansel Goode and Yarmouth’s Finn Grimnes, Van Podhouser and Henry Weiss.
The girls’ Alpine all-star team featured Freeport’s Silvi Strong, Greely’s Caitlin McCarron and Yarmouth’s Finley Giguere, Logan MacLeod and Gwenneth Zimmerman.
The WMC boys’ Nordic all-star team included Freeport’s Owen Dawson, Greely’s Tait Harvey and Yarmouth’s Eli Chalmers, Mateo Coury, Alexander Gordon, Leif Hellstedt and Aksel Moon.
Freeport’s Owen Dawson qualified for the WMC Nordic All-Academic team.
The WMC girls Nordic squad featured Freeport’s Lucy Huggett, Amelia Prince and Reed Proscia, Greely’s Rowan Barry and Evelyn LaCasse, Maine Coast Waldorf’s Soren Stark-Chessa, Waynflete’s Leah Kramer and Yarmouth’s Paige Brewer.
The WMC Nordic All-Academic team included Waynflete’s Leah Kramer and Cecily Niese.
Cheering
The SMAA cheering all-star team included Aoife Meehan, Lorelai Noonan, Shaylin Pearson and Sloane Snyder of league champion Scarborough.
Scarborough’s Anna Bliss and Maggie Ferguson and South Portland’s Sophia Anderson and Jaymison Harper were honorable mentions.
