One person was hospitalized and two firefighters injured after a fire tore through a condemned single-family home in Bangor Monday morning, state officials say.

Crews with the Bangor fire and police departments responded to 75 4th St. shortly before 6 a.m. Monday, Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a written statement.

A preliminary investigation found that the blaze was likely started by a propane gas explosion.

“The building, a condemned single-family home that had been boarded up by the city, was initially reported to have people trapped inside,” Moss said.

While no one was found in the building when crews arrived, one person who had been inside the home sustained “serious burn injuries” and was transported to a local hospital. The man, who has not been publicly identified, will be treated further at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Moss said.

Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries, which were treated on-site, she said.

An investigation continues, and the Maine Fuel Board has been called to assist, Moss said.
