Per usual, Scarborough athletes and teams were in the mix for championships this winter in just about everything.

It was another memorable campaign and here’s one last look back:

Indoor track

Scarborough’s greatest success this winter came on the track, as the boys won the Class A state title and the girls placed second to Bangor.

The boys’ squad edged Lewiston, 72 points to 68, and finished first for the third time in four seasons, the eighth time in nine years and it captured its 13th crown in 16 years and its 23rd all-time, dating to 1986.

Ethan Keller won the mile in 4 minutes, 28 seconds and was also fourth in the two-mile (9:57.67). Wyatt Martin was first in the pole vault (15 feet).

The Scarborough girls hoped for a repeat championship, but their 74 points left than four points shy of Bangor.

The Red Storm got wins from Isabella Harmon in the pole vault (10-0) and the high jump (5-6), as well as from Laurel Driscoll in the mile (5:04.01).

Swimming

In the pool, Scarborough’s boys swim team wasn’t able to win a fourth consecutive Class A state title, coming in third with 198 points (Falmouth won the title with 244 and Edward Little/Lewiston/Poland/Leavitt was runner-up with 226.5).

Boys basketball

Scarborough’s boys basketball team went 8-10 in the regular season and defeated Deering in the Class AA South quarterfinals, 68-48, but in the semifinals, the Red Storm were no match for eventual regional champion South Portland, losing, 63-45, to wind up 9-11. Adam Fitzpatrick had 17 points and Carter Blanche added 15 in the final game to no avail.

“I’m proud of my kids,” said Scarborough coach Phil Conley. “We lost seven seniors last year, plus Spencer (Booth), our big, who’s 6-11, who transferred, so no one expected us to get this far, but they battled for me all year. To get here is a good thing.”

Girls basketball

Scarborough’s girls team had a similar story. The Red Storm went 8-10 in the regular season, then knocked off Thornton Academy, 52-44, in the quarterfinals to get to the semifinals at the Cross Insurance Arena. There, Scarborough ran into eventual champion South Portland and was ousted, 46-37, to wind up 9-11. Eva Alvarez had 13 points in defeat.

“It was the worst matchup we could have had,” said Red Storm coach Mike Giordano. “It’s the third time they’ve beaten us. My hat’s off to them, but our kids battled.”

Boys hockey

On the ice, the Scarborough boys earned the ninth and final seed for the Class A state playoffs, but was beaten in the preliminary round by St. Dom’s, 5-1, to wind up 9-10.

Girls hockey

On the girls’ side, the Falmouth/Scarborough co-op team finished 5-14 after a 3-2 overtime loss to Biddeford in the South Region quarterfinals.

Alpine skiing

Scarborough’s girls made some noise in Alpine skiing, placing fourth at the Class A state meet.  Clara Ferrie finished runner-up in the giant slalom with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 13 seconds. She also came in 22nd in the slalom (1:31.13). Madison Bailey placed 14th in the GS (1:17.57) and 20th in the slalom (1:30.19).

Wrestling

The Scarborough/Gorham co-op wrestling team did not score at the Class A state meet, which was won by Noble.
