Stephen Gorrie Knowlton

COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho – Dr. Stephen Gorrie Knowlton, DMD, DC, passed away peacefully in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on Jan. 25, 2025, at the age of 77, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was the cherished son of Robert Canfield Knowlton, DMD, and Martha Gorrie Knowlton. He was predeceased by both parents and his brother, Capt. Gregory Canfield Knowlton.

Dr. Steve’s presence was larger than life and his humor was very unique to him, he could make anyone laugh. To know and love him was incredible and being in his company made everyone feel very lucky.

Over the years he had three dental practices in Standish and Westbrook, Maine. He was a pioneer in the dental industry. In 1977, under Maine law all advertising by a dentist was “unprofessional conduct”. Dr. Steve called out that law and he faced the revocation of his dental license due to his advertisements though he was never prosecuted. He won a nationwide advertising competition in the 1980’s! Steve also became a news anchor and local correspondent at the Westbrook cable TV channel 12, WNEC, for the weekly Newsline show.

After experiencing wrist and hand pain, he decided to retire from dentistry to study and receive his Doctorate in Chiropractic. After some physical challenges requiring several surgeries, he was forced to retire. He and his wife Patricia enjoyed lots of travels over the many years together and settled in Coeur d’Alene.

Dr. Steve is survived by his wife of over 34 years, Patricia Love Locke; his daughter Dr. Kimberly and husband Capt. Keith Waters, Pat’s children Edward and his wife Susan Locke, Kenneth and his wife Jennifer Locke and Juliet Porcari; grandchildren Kaitlyn Waters, Kelci Waters, Kortney Waters, Michael Locke, Samuel Locke, Tucker Locke, Isabella Locke, Jameson Porcari, Siena Porcari, Anthony Porcari, Chase Porcari, Will Locke and Leann Locke.

At Dr. Steve’s request there will be no service.
