Merton Rutherford
CAPE ELIZABETH – On Feb. 5, 2025, we lost our father, dear friend and a true patriot. “Mert” was born in 1939 and was raised with eight siblings on Munjoy Hill. They all attended Portland schools and were exceptional athletes.
Mert was kind, giving, a leader and true friend to so many. He proudly served in the US Army, Airborne 508 Infantry Division, as a paratrooper. He was an “active” member of the American Legion Post 17, Portland Eagles and IAFF. He never missed a meeting and held offices in each organization. For decades Mert would attend the funerals of every deceased veteran, whether he knew them or not. He wanted to pay his respect.
Mert retired from the Portland Fire Department in 1989. Throughout his career, he bravely fought dangerous fires, saved lives and served as IAFF union president. He was so proud of his career and military service.
Mert was also very proud of his family. He married our mother, Joan MacDonald Butler, in 1969. He quickly and selflessly accepted his role as “stepdad”. We have been blessed with his unconditional love and compassion our entire lives. No one could have done a better job. We thank you.
Sadly, Mert was predeceased by his parents; siblings; his wife, Joanie; and his son, Bob.
He is survived by his children, Chuck Butler (Kathy), David Butler, Terri Paulger, Laurie Fournier (Troy), also Joany Fitzpatrick. A special thanks to his loving grandson Peter White and Sonya. They cared for Mert during his declining health and kept him in his home. Mert leaves behind eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
We will have a celebration of his life in the spring.
