The fog bell next to the Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth fell on Tuesday, Dec. 17. It was “brought down by … the power of the salt air,” the town stated on its website. Fog bells at lighthouses are used to alert ships to the coastline in the case of fog or other conditions that limit visibility. As of Monday, the town was still assessing the damage and repairs.
