The Piscataqua River Bridge reopened to traffic after police closed the bridge for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon.
The bridge, which carries Interstate 95 over the river separating Maine and New Hampshire, had been shut down because of a “person in mental health crisis,” New Hampshire State Police said in a statement on social media shortly before 2:20 p.m. The department said troopers were on-scene but did not provide further details.
The bridge was closed for more than an hour, creating lengthy backups on the highway in Maine and New Hampshire.
Police announced the closure before 2 p.m. Initially, only the southbound lanes were closed, but Maine State Police announced that the entire bridge was closed just before 2:20 p.m. The bridge reopened just before 3:20 p.m.
Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Maine State Police officers were “only assisting” on scene and referred questions about the incident to New Hampshire authorities.
Tyler Dumont, spokesperson for the New Hampshire Department of Safety, said no details would be available beyond what the department had posted on X.
