A pedestrian died Wednesday after being hit by an Amtrak Downeaster in New Hampshire.
The accident occurred at about 1:20 p.m. in a wooded area in Exeter between Front Street and Powder Mill Road. The person was walking along the tracks and was unaware of the approaching southbound train, the Exeter Police Department said.
Amtrak train 684 was traveling from Brunswick to Boston Wednesday when the pedestrian was hit, Amtrak said. The train was delayed for just under three hours.
The victim has not yet been identified by police.
The Downeaster makes five daily trips between Brunswick and Boston.
In August, another Amtrak crash hit and killed a Portland man who was walking on the tracks near Morrill’s Corner. A few months later, two men were hit and seriously injured by a freight train in Old Orchard Beach on the same track the Downeaster uses. One of the men died at the scene. Two weeks ago, another Portland man died in a train crash behind Gilman Electrical Supply on Saint James Street.
