Margaret H. Vincent

SANFORD – Margaret H. Vincent, 73, of Sanford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, after a brief illness.

Born on March 9, 1951, to James T. and Dorothea (Horne) Hill in Sanford. Margaret was a lifelong resident of Sanford/Springvale. She attended local schools and graduated from Sanford High School with the class of 1969. She also attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, where she explored her interest in oceanography.

Margaret’s career spanned over four decades within the Sanford school system, where she was highly regarded and worked as an administrative secretary. She concluded her career at the Margaret Chase Smith School, retiring after 42 years of dedicated service to the community’s children and families.

In 1974, Margaret’s best friend in high school, Sonia McGinnis, (Ronald’s cousin), introduced her to Ron, who had just returned from his service in the Navy. Ron and Margaret met in October of 1974 and clicked instantly. They were married less than a year later on July 12, 1975. Ron and Margaret were going to celebrate their 50 years of devoted marriage on July 12, 2025. Together, they raised two sons, Andrew and Steven. Margaret was overjoyed with the addition of a granddaughter to her family, Kendall, in 2010.

Margaret was clever and quick witted; she was a voracious reader who loved immersing herself in mysteries. She found comfort in the peace and quiet of home, where she took great pride in maintaining beloved family traditions, especially at Christmas. She was proud to make a few of her favorites, such as her homemade Bangor Taffy, beef jerky, and buttery shortbread—a tribute to her heritage and a treat for those who were lucky enough to taste them. Margaret was a no-nonsense, straightforward woman who enjoyed the balance of a fulfilling career and a peaceful home life.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, her niece Dorothea Hill, and her brother-in-law Spencer Stonemetz. She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Ronald Vincent; her sons, Andrew J. Vincent of Portland, and Steven J. Vincent and his wife Jennifer of Sanford; her granddaughter, Kendall A. Vincent; her sister, Marjory H. Stonemetz of York; her brother, James Hill, and his wife Kaye of Gorham; her niece Jennifer Cray of Portsmouth; her nephews, James Stonemetz of North Berwick, and James Hill of Windham; as well as extended family in England.

A time of visitation will be held on Monday, November 11, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following at 12 p.m. A private burial will be held later in the week at Riverside Cemetery.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their compassionate care and support.

Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
