Let’s work hard to send Democrats to Augusta on Nov. 5. Yes, the presidential race is crucial. But Maine’s state races are crucial, too. After all, the balance in the Maine House and Senate is at stake. With control of these houses comes – among other things – the ability to appoint a strong, pro-democracy Secretary of State.
The incumbent, Shenna Bellows, has done a fantastic job, and we need her to stay on the job. Maine’s first female Secretary of State, Bellows has built coalitions of Republicans and Democrats to support privacy and civil rights for all.
As Bellows has said, “My obligation as Secretary of State is to follow the law and uphold the Constitution. That’s my sole consideration in evaluating any candidate qualifications for office.” She passes her own test. We need her in Augusta.
