While cross country is on the cusp of producing its state champions, the postseason fun has just begun in volleyball, field hockey and soccer with the football playoffs about to commence as well.
There have already been upsets, overtimes and dominant performances and this week figures to be action-packed throughout.
Buckle up, as here’s a glimpse of how Scarborough teams have fared:
Cross country

Scarborough’s boys’ cross country team was second to Portland at last Saturday’s Class A South regional championship meet at Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland. The Red Storm, who qualified for states for the 25th consecutive postseason, finished with 70 points, while the Bulldogs won with 43. Ethan Keller (fourth on the 5-kilometer course with a time of 17 minutes, 1.24 seconds) and Atticus Merriam (eighth, 17:21.85) finished in the top 10 individually. Also scoring were Baxter Merriam (14th, 17:38.65), Landen Springer (17th, 17:45.6) and Nicholas Koziell (27th, 18:26.77).
In the girls’ meet, won by Falmouth with 50 points, Scarborough (173) came in sixth, qualifying for states for the first time since 2019. Laurel Driscoll led the Red Storm with a second-place showing (19:41.86). Also scoring for Scarborough were Emma DuEst (24th, 21:57.94), Grace Lavoie (34th, 22:54.92), Rowan Driscoll (44th, 23:35.53) and Camdyn Conant (69th, 25:15.71).
Boys’ soccer

Scarborough’s boys’ soccer team, ranked third in Class A South, began its title quest Tuesday with a 2-0 home win over No. 6 Deering in the quarterfinal round to improve to 13-1-1 on the year. The Red Storm were on their heels almost the entire first half, as the Rams earned eight corner kicks, but they fought them off and with just over three minutes to go before halftime, Khalil Ghosheh set up Denver Bachman, whose shot was knocked home by Matthew Booth to put Scarborough in front to stay. Midway through the second half, a 40-yard Bachman free kick was steered home by Finn Coburn and the Red Storm advanced to the semifinals, something they couldn’t do a year ago.
“We defended really well,” Coburn said. “We marked up in the box really well. We’re gritty in the box and showed who we are as a team. We’re really good at defending and transitioning. It’s an all-around team effort.”
“Deering’s a good team,” said longtime Red Storm coach Mark Diaz. “They have a lot of talent. I thought they played really well today, so this is a big win for us.”
Scarborough next plays Friday or Saturday, either at No. 2 Falmouth (11-2-1) or at home versus Biddeford (10-5).
Scarborough’s lone loss this year came Sept. 21 at Falmouth (3-2). Since then, the Red Storm have gone 9-0-1 and have won eight straight. Scarborough is 2-1 all-time versus the Navigators in the postseason, with a 2-1 victory in the 2022 quarterfinals the most recent. The Red Storm did not face Biddeford this fall and the teams have no playoff history.
“Last time we played (Falmouth), we played great, but they generated more offense,” Bachman said. “I think with our defense, we can hold them if we play them again.”
“This feels great and now, we have to prepare,” said Coburn. “We don’t care who we play next. We’ll be ready.”
“We have to start better than we did today and I think we will,” added Diaz. “I always feel like the first (playoff game), everyone is up tight. Usually the second game, you see better quality soccer. Hopefully we can do that. This feels good, but we have a lot of more work to do. We’ll see what happens.”
The Class A South Final is Tuesday of next week in Waterboro.
Girls’ soccer
On the girls’ side, the two-time reigning state champion Red Storm finished second in Class A South and Tuesday, won their ninth straight postseason contest, 4-1, over visiting No. 7 seed Marshwood. The Hawks scored first, but Emmy Flaker tied the score before halftime. In the second half, Delia Fravert had two goals and Paige Garlock also scored as Scarborough improved to 12-1-2.
Scarborough hosts No. 3 Gorham (12-2-1) in the semifinals Friday. The teams played to a 1-1 draw Sept. 5 in Scarborough, then the Red Storm rolled to a 4-0 victory in the regular season finale Oct. 22 in Gorham. Scarborough holds a 5-3 all-time lead in the rivals’ playoff series, with last year’s 3-2 overtime win in the regional final the most recent.
The Class A South Final is Tuesday of next week in Waterboro.
Football
Scarborough’s football team fell to 2-6 with a 39-20 home loss to South Portland last Friday. A 61-yard fumble return for a touchdown from Kevin Collins gave the Red Storm a 6-0 lead after one quarter, but the Red Riots scored 20 unanswered points in the second period for a 20-6 halftime lead. After South Portland struck again, Kingston Griffiths caught a 48-yard pass from Oscar Goss to pull Scarborough within 26-13 heading to the fourth quarter. There, the Red Riots ended all doubt with two more scores and a late TD from Collins (on a 3-yard pass from Logan O’Keefe) accounted for the final score.
The Red Storm are ranked sixth in the Class A South Crabtree Points standings where only four teams make the playoffs. Scarborough closed at 6-2 Thornton Academy, the reigning state champion, Thursday, needing an upset victory to have any hope of making it to the postseason. The Golden Trojans won last year’s encounter, 50-7.
Field hockey
Scarborough’s field hockey team finished 6-9 after a 1-0 loss at Massabesic in the Class A South preliminary round.
Volleyball

Scarborough’s volleyball team earned the No. 6 seed in Class A. The Red Storm then blanked No. 11 South Portland (25-22, 25-13, 25-20) in last Thursday’s preliminary round.
South Portland held a 20-14 advantage in the first set before four aces from Natale Philibert sparked a 9-0 run and a 25-22 victory, which was capped by a kill from captain Olivia Ingream. The Red Storm’s second game victory was more traditional, as Madi Clements’ back-to-back aces helped produce an early lead and and a 7-0 service run, featuring three aces from Ingream, opened it up and Scarborough prevailed, 25-13. The Red Riots did all they could to extend the match in the third set and even led, 19-14, but the Red Storm weren’t willing to delay matters, as they produced 11 of the final 12 points, and one final service run from Philibert finished off a 25-20 win and a 3-0 match victory.
Scarborough had 18 aces on the night. Philibert finished with 16 service points, including seven aces, and also had seven assists. Clements added 13 service points, including four aces. Ingream had eight service points, including three aces, and five kills.
“We just had to increase our communication,” Ingream said. “We had our talks in the center and got everyone hyped. We wanted to finish them off in three.”
“Serving has always been a strong suit of ours,” said Red Storm coach Nicole Petherbridge. “It’s one of our biggest upper-hands. Serve-receive is one of the hardest parts of high school volleyball, so if we can go on runs by serving aggressively, that’s been a secret to our success. It helped keep (South Portland) at bay and didn’t allow them to run their offense.”
Scarborough then lost in four sets (22-25, 25-14, 21-25, 12-25) at No. 3 Gorham, the reigning Class A champion, in Saturday’s quarterfinals to finish the year 7-9.
