Samuel Almeida scored two minutes into overtime as sixth-seeded Deering survived a Class A South boys’ soccer preliminary round contest Saturday, earning a 1-0 win against No. 11 Marshwood in Portland.
The defending regional champions (8-6-1) will face No. 3 Scarborough in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Almeida’s goal was unassisted and ricocheted off the right post and into the net.
Deering goalkeeper Jack Borland made five saves, including a point-blank stop on Owen Boyer with just under two minutes left in regulation.
The Hawks (5-9-1) got four saves from Carter Shaw.
GORHAM 2, CHEVERUS 0: Riley Dever set up goals by Owen Spear in the first half and Moises Ntango in the second half – both on free kicks – as the fifth-seeded Rams (10-4-1) beat the No. 12 Stags (5-10) in a Class A South prelim at Gorham.
The Rams advance to play No. 4 Portland in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
FRYEBURG ACADEMY 7, POLAND 0: Andre DiMolfetta and AJ Ayala each scored twice during a seven-goal blitz in the first half as the eighth-seeded Raiders (8-6-1) eliminated the ninth-seeded Knights (6-9) in a Class B South prelim at Fryeburg.
Tucker Barnaby, Pepe Pardo and Paolo Stoopen each added a goal to help the Raiders advance to the quarterfinals Wednesday against No. 1 Greely.
BIDDEFORD 7, WESTBROOK 1: Zeus Rankin scored five goals, Saion Rankin had a goal and three assists, and the seventh-seeded Tigers (10-5) handled the 10th-seeded Blue Blazes (6-7-2) in Biddeford.
Zeus Rankin gave Biddeford a 2-0 lead in the first half after finishing a cross from his brother in the eighth minute and heading in his brother’s corner kick in the 24th.
He also scored the first two goals of the second half, including a free kick from 45 yards.
Westbrook’s Mo Ahmed scored on a 40-yard floater about a minute later to make it 4-1.
Rankin got his final goal when he beat Westbrook’s offside trap attempt and struck home a serve by Miradi Siku in the 57th minute.
Saion Rankin scored on a low shot from 25 yards with 18:56 left and Gervasio Nzombo converted a 45-yard free kick with 9:22 to go.
Biddeford keeper Xavier Pineau stopped a penalty kick in the second half.
FOOTBALL
OLD ORCHARD BEACH 58, TELSTAR 0: Trot Moody threw three touchdown passes to Riley Provencher, caught a scoring pass and rushed for a TD as the Seagulls (8-0) completed their second straight undefeated regular season, beating the Rebels (1-7) in Bethel.
Moody opened the scoring with a 43-yard reception from Wes Gallant. Later, he had a 6-yard touchdown run, and connected with Provencher for scoring plays of 25, 34 and 40 yards.
OOB also got TD runs from Quincy Corcoran, Daniel Cashman and Matthew Charron.
VOLLEYBALL
YARMOUTH 3, FALMOUTH 0: Grace Keaney finished with 11 kills as the third-seeded Clippers (12-4) advanced to the Class B semifinals by defeating the No. 6 Navigators (10-6) in three sets, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20.
Yarmouth, the reigning state champion, also got three blocks from Lilli Burrows and four aces from Norah Lushman.
FIELD HOCKEY
MASSABESIC 1, SCARBOROUGH 0: Charlize Anderson’s goal in the third quarter held up for the eight-seeded Mustangs (9-6) against the ninth-seeded Red Storm (6-9) in a Class A South prelim in Waterboro.
Massabesic advances to play top-ranked Cheverus in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
