I hope Maine Sen. Susan Collins and her staff have seen the play at Portland Stage, “Conscience.” Perhaps watching Margaret Chase Smith confront Joseph McCarthy will remind them that a great Maine senator once stood up to a bully. Perhaps it will inspire Sen. Collins to actively speak out against the current bully heading her party.
If Smith is not enough of an inspiration, perhaps Sen. Collins will consider the same courage demonstrated by Liz Cheney and other women, who formerly worked for our current bully. We cannot afford another four years of a demagogue and liar.
I urge Sen. Collins to stop waffling and speak out with the truth. She will not be remembered kindly for her silence.
