Marc E. Grenier Jr., 70, of Tainan City, Taiwan, died suddenly from a heart attack Friday Oct 4, 2024.

He was born Dec. 14, 1953, in Biddeford a son of Marc and Ruth (Valliere) Grenier. He graduated from Biddeford High School in 1971 after attending Saint Louis High School for three years and grudgingly having to attend Biddeford High School for his senior year. Marc served in the Army from 1972-1975, stationed at USAR CPAC in St Louis, Missouri, and lastly at USAR FORCES FT Devens, Massachusetts. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and honorably discharged in November of 1975. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maine in 1979, with an Associate of Science in Selective Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.

He moved to Canada in June of 1979, where he met and married his first wife Linda in 1985. Marc graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec with a Masters in Sociology in 1982, and his Doctorate of Philosophy in 1983. He won both the Max Bell Fellowship and the Max Binz Fellowship and chaired International Learned Conferences. He also sang Tenor 1 in the famed Classical Choir of Montreal. Marc was a professor of Sociology at McGill University in Montreal and later at Herzing College also in Montreal.

Marc went to Taiwan in 2004, where he married Vicky in 2005. He taught English at the University of Taipei. He recently completed his Masters in Theology at the Chang Jung Christian University in Taiwan, ROC where he also taught classes in Theology and landed honorary membership into the coveted Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society and secured publications in prominent international theological journals including the Gregorianum in Rome, the International Journal of Philosophy and Theology, and the International Journal of Religious and Cultural Studies in Britain.

Marc loved education, but his first love was music. He was an avid self taught musician, guitar and piano player and music composer with many live concert performances and more then 10 studio and live albums. He owned a restaurant/lounge named “The Jazzy Place” in Taiwan where he would often take the stage playing guitar and singing. He performed a solo concert at the Taipei Cultural Center which was well attended. Marc sent home the videos and CDs for his Mom to view and enjoy the old time music he sang. He dedicated the performance and CD to his Mother Ruth.

Marc was a lifelong learner. Fluent in five languages, he was proud of his many degrees and put them to good use while a professor in Montreal and in Taiwan. He owned and operated a specialized school in Taiwan (MEG Educational and Business Services) teaching English to students in middle and high school, and also preparing them for testing into American colleges. He authored many books and is published in many articles and journals around the world. Marc had something to say, and he said it. His book “Christianity or Marxianity?” was published last year and dedicated to his friend Jasmine Mei Ling Lai with depthless love, respect, and appreciation. Without her comprehensive and boundless support, encouragement, and confidence over many years of challenges, that writing project would never have happened, much less come to full
spiritual yield as it has. His latest book: “Godless Disciples of Modern Scripture – Darwin, Marx, & Freud” is in printing at this time and will be published in December. He dedicated the book to his parents.

Marc also took care of many stray dogs in Taiwan, often being their only source for food and care while loving and caring for his own Shih Tzu named Meyisha which he nursed back to health after a serious illness. He lost his beloved poodle named Tory while in Montreal. He also had two other poodles along the way and made his balcony in Taiwan a little bird sanctuary where he fed and cared for wild birds along with his beloved lorikeet named Rainbow who had free flying air space in his home.

He loved to read and sing and write songs and play music. He was a Son, A Brother, an Uncle, a Husband, a Friend, a Musician, a Student, a Teacher … a Child of God.

Marc was preceded in death by: his father, Marc E. Grenier Sr. on Aug. 22, 1993;  and by his mother, Ruth C. (Valliere) Grenier on Nov. 10, 2012.
