As South Portland residents vote next month, I hope they ask themselves this question: “What have these leaders done to help taxpayers?” Other than spending money on anyone but us, I would say nothing. All of these folks seeking reelection have been involved in our city government for one or more terms, some for years. It’s time to rethink who we are putting in charge of our city. They have found millions to support refugees yet have repealed a law to freeze taxes for elderly citizens because of the cost. Misha Pride recommends taking out reverse mortgages. These folks have all been in office during the greatest increase in taxes and values in our city’s history. At least Steven Riley expressed concerns that they need to reduce spending – and can. These folks only run just to foster their own agendas and pet projects. It’s gone on far too long and needs to stop.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
