Rocco Frenzilli, who started the Portland boys’ soccer program way back in 1972, and has served as the Bulldogs’ coach in two different stints spanning nearly four decades, earned his 300th career victory Wednesday evening when Portland beat Sanford, 9-0.

Frenzilli’s time on the sidelines began the year of Watergate, the first Dallas Cowboys’ Super Bowl championship, the first of three straight Oakland A’s’ World Series titles and the year that the epic movie “The Godfather” was released.

Frenzilli, 76, has led the Bulldogs to the regional final on six occasions and to the Class A state final in 2010 and again in 2017. This season, Portland is off to a 6-1-1 start.

“I’m honored and humbled,” said Frenzilli, who retired from teaching six years ago. “I’ve gotten congratulations from a lot of former players, parents and coaches and it just warms my heart remembering those times with them. I’ve enjoyed the ride. It’s been wonderful. I have a lot of fond memories.

“It’s been a great ride and I’m taking it one year at a time. I’m still enjoying myself with the guys.”
