A change of the calendar brings a new level of excitement to the fall sports campaign.
We’re now in the second half of the regular season schedule and every remaining contest is filled with importance.
The postseason isn’t far off and the fun is just beginning for Scarborough’s teams.
Here’s an overview:
Boys’ soccer

Scarborough’s boys’ soccer team was 6-1-1 at press time, following an 8-0 home win over Sanford, a 1-1 home tie versus Portland and Tuesday’s dramatic 1-0 overtime home victory over Windham. In the win over the Spartans, Finn Coburn and Cooper Mallar had two goals apiece and Denver Buchanan, Matt Fallona, Angelo Gomez and Benjamin Shea added one apiece. Khalil Ghosheh scored to give the Red Storm a lead against the Bulldogs, but Portland tied the game just before halftime. Scarborough had some good chances in overtime, including a header from Coburn which went just wide, before settling for the draw.
“It was a tough game against a tough team,” Coburn said. “It was competitive. Both teams had chances. We fought hard. Our defense was strong. I’m happy with the way we played. We just got a little bit unlucky. That last play, I just missed the header wide. We’ll move on and get them next game. We hope to see them again in the playoffs and if we do, it’ll be another great game.”
“It was a good game, just what we expected,” said longtime Red Storm coach Mark Diaz. “Two great teams, a playoff atmosphere. I’m pretty happy with our effort today. We’d like to get the (Heal Points), but it was just the first round and we’ll respond to it.”
Against the Eagles, Matthew Booth was credited for the only goal when his cross deflected off a defender and in. Scarborough plays at Bonny Eagle Saturday, then comes home to meet Massabesic Wednesday of next week.
“We just have to keep working and when we get a chance, we have to put it in the back of the net,” said Coburn.
“I’m proud of the conference I get to coach in,” Diaz said. “It’s a great conference, the best in the state and it’s not even close. Every night is a battle. It’s like the (Southeastern Conference) in (college) football. Whoever does come out will deserve it.”
Girls’ soccer

Scarborough’s two-time reigning Class A champion girls’ soccer team was 5-0-2 following a 1-0 home win over Sanford and Tuesday’s exciting 1-1 tie at Cheverus. Delia Fravert had the lone goal against the Spartans and goalkeeper Vera DiSotto made six saves. In the draw, Fravert scored in the first minute of the game. The Stags answered in the second half and that’s how it ended.
“I think this game had more growing pains than we’ve had, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing,” longtime Scarborough coach Mike Farley said. “It gives us something to build on. We were in a battle and didn’t give up the decisive goal to take the loss.”
The Red Storm welcome Noble Saturday, then have two huge tests next week, at Falmouth Tuesday and at home versus highly-touted Windham Thursday.
“The girls have done a great job,” Farley said. “I’ve changed our shape and how we play to hopefully fit this group of players better. We have to get better at the little things because that’s what separates the best teams. If we want homefield advantage for playoffs, we have to win the big games coming up. The margin of error is a lot less than it was.”
Football
On the gridiron, Scarborough dropped its third straight game last Saturday, 40-0, at Oxford Hills, to fall to 1-3.
The Red Storm hope to bounce back Friday at Cony (2-2)
Field hockey
Scarborough’s field hockey team fell to 3-3 Monday after a 4-3 loss at Windham. Cassie Niles, Sabrina Ocampo and Ruby Weidner had the goals and Avery Ingersoll made five saves.
The Red Storm hosted South Portland/Westbrook Wednesday and welcomed Massabesic for a makeup game Thursday. Next week, Scarborough hosts defending Class A champion Cheverus Tuesday and Gorham Thursday.
Volleyball
On the court, Scarborough was 5-4 after holding off visiting Cheverus in five games (25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 19-25, 16-14) and losing at Falmouth in five sets (25-17, 25-21, 13-25, 23-25, 15-17).
The Red Storm had a rematch at Cheverus Thursday (see our website for story) and play host to Falmouth next Tuesday before welcoming Gorham in a state rematch Thursday of next week.
Cross country
Scarborough joined South Portland and Noble for a meet at Kennebunk last week.
The Red Storm boys were first and produced the top individual in Ethan Keller, who had a time of 17 minutes, 5.88 seconds.
Scarborough’s girls placed first as well and were led by individual champion Laurel Driscoll (19:58.78).
Golf
Scarborough’s golf team suffered its first loss last week, 7.5-5.5 to Cheverus, then bounced back to defeat South Portland (9-4) to improve to 7-1 on the season. Erik Swenson shot a team-best nine-hole round of 40 versus the Stags. In the win over the Bulldogs, Nick Harmon was the medalist with a 34.
The Red Storm wrapped up the regular season at home versus Portland Thursday.
