Bernard T. Muehle

GORHAM – Bernard T. Muehle, 88, passed away peacefully at his home Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, after a long illness. He was the son of Paul V. Muehle and Mary Haskell Muehle of North Gorham.

Bernie was born in Portland on Jan. 30, 1936 and lived his entire life between 220 and 224 North Gorham Rd.

When Bernie was in high school he had the unique opportunity of working for his father, who at the time owned a station wagon and school buses. Bernie’s dad, Paul Muehle was contracted to deliver students from North Gorham to the Village.

Yes, Bernie drove himself as well as his neighbors/friends to and back from school in Gorham in the early 1950s.

It was at Gorham High School that he met Janice Harmon. Janice and Bernie were married on Jan. 28, 1955, at the Windham Hill United Church of Christ.

He worked for Lily Transportation, Nissan’s, Coke, and Pioneer, and retired from driving truck in 1998. He was a member of the Portland Local 340, and served as a reserve in the Sea-bee’s, as well as a volunteer member of the North Gorham Fire Department.

Recently, Bernie hosted his remaining 1954 Gorham High School classmates for their 70th reunion. The Gorham Times kindly published a picture and write-up for the occasion.

Bernie was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Janice Harmon Muehle in 2017; his son-in-law, Stephen Newcomb in 1998; his grandson, Brent R. Muehle in 2016; and his great-granddaughter, Clara Eve Flaherty in 2024.

He is survived by his sister, Vera Muehle of Greenville; five children, Michael Muehle of North Gorham, Brian Kirk Muehle and wife Cindy of Windham, Kat Powers of Scarborough, Kim Muehle of Bocas Del Toro, Panama and her partner Fauster Vittone, and James Muehle of North Gorham; nine grandchildren, Sandra Muehle and her husband Dan, Paul Muehle and his wife Lindsi of Gorham, Sarah Muehle of Portland, Breezy Flaherty and her husband Mike Flaherty of Westbrook, Ashley Kirby of Windham, Bella Muehle and Gretchen Muehle of Westbrook, Slade Overcash and Trenton Overcash of Scarborough; and four great-grandchildren, Gabriella Muehle, Ella Muehle, Brody Muehle and Brent T. Muehle all of Southern Maine.

A Celebration of Life will take place Oct. 20 at North Gorham Congregational Church at 2 p.m.
