Here’s a selection of Tim Sample’s wit and wisdom on a variety of subjects over the years.

On gay rights: “People in Maine don’t care much about what you do in the bedroom. They care whether you have jumper cables and if you’re gonna stop.”

On Maine humor: “It’s survivalist humor. In Maine, it comes from this state where it’s so rural – hardscrabble economy, hardscrabble weather, hardscrabble everything.”

On his reputation: “Basically, I’m known as the guy from Maine. People come up to me in airports and say, ‘Aren’t you the guy from Maine?’ and I say, ‘There’s a couple other guys up there too.'”

On his shows: “These younger people in their 20s and 30s who come to my shows don’t have any idea what it’s like to sit for an hour or an hour-and-a-half through a monologue, and they’re laughing, and there’s no F-bombs and there’s no targeting of racial, ethnic or cultural groups. So, I say to folks, if you don’t know what that would look like, come on and find out.”

On recycling: “In Maine, there is a deeply ingrained sense that you can always get a little more use out of something.”
