Dorothy Elizabeth (Betty) Ashley
SACO – Dorothy Elizabeth (Betty) Ashley, of New County Road, passed away on Sept. 13, 2024. She was born in Biddeford, Maine on October 22,1929, the daughter of John and Dorothy (Wilcox) Tarbox.
Betty graduated from Maine Central lnstitute in 1948 and from the University of Maine in 1952 with a degree in History and Government.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Zeta sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Maine Mayflower Society. She married Albert Ashley in 1952, it was the happiest day of her life. Betty and her family lived in Holliston, Mass. for over three decades. She retired from the Holliston Public Library as the Assistant Librarian. In 1995, she and Al moved back to Maine, in her words, “God’s Country”.
Betty enjoyed reading, walking, and bike riding. She loved to laugh and to tell funny stories, especially with her special cousin Earnest Tarbox.
Betty loved her family and her pets.
Survivors include son John Tarbox Ashley of Holliston, Mass., daughters Alison Ashley Wilcox of Ridgefield, Wash. and Deborah Ann Ashley of Saco; sister Nancy Ann Tarbox, and brother John Tarbox and his wife Joanne and their children John and Jennifer, all of New York. Her husband Al died in 2012.
A special “thank you” to the Saco and Biddeford First Responders for their help, kindness, and patience.
A private graveside service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco with Rev. Burton Howe officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, Saco.
