A 7-year-old boy died Tuesday after collapsing while playing flag football at the Bath Area Family YMCA.
Evan Briggs was a second-grader at West Bath School, family members confirmed Thursday. They declined to speak further.
After Briggs collapsed, staff immediately performed CPR and called paramedics, YMCA officials wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday night. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
West Bath School officials could not be reached for comment Thursday about whether support was available to students or staff.
“We were devastated to learn that, despite the best efforts of our staff and emergency responders, the young child passed away,” the YMCA’s post said. “Our entire Y family is deeply saddened by this situation. Our thoughts and prayers remain with this young child, his family and friends, as well as those who came to his aid.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
