Age Friendly South Portland is getting the word out about a new home-sharing program that can potentially match homeowners who have excess space with those in need of housing. Nesterly is partnering with MaineHousing in a pilot program to help link homeowners and potential tenants. They do background and credit checks on both homeowners and potential renters and can help identify needs and wants, and can help homeowners with things like establishing ground rules and expectations with a prospective tenant.
The program is meant to help older Mainers, who often live in homes with unused space and are burdened by housing costs, with younger, working people who can’t find affordable housing. Program partners include Maine AARP, the Governor’s Council on Aging, the Maine Council on Aging and others. For more information go to nesterly.com, or call (877) 958-8785.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
