Kyle Abbott’s 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown broke a tie at the end of a wild first quarter, and Massabesic went on to a 28-14 win at Cheverus in an interclass football game Saturday in Portland.
Cheverus (0-2) got first-quarter TD runs of 3 and 62 yards from Matt Baker, but the Mustangs (2-0) answered with a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Cam Bradbury and a 25-yard pass from Bradbury to Caden Nielsen.
Abbott’s return made it 20-14, and Bradbury connected with Nielsen for an 87-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Bradbury finished 7 of 15 for 207 yards. Nielsen had three catches for 145 yards.
Baker paced the Stags with 141 yards on 15 carries.
BOYS’ SOCCER
PORTLAND 2, FALMOUTH 1: Silvio Mbayi headed home Baptista Muanda’s corner kick midway through the second overtime as Portland (3-0) beat visiting Falmouth (2-1).
All three Bulldogs’ wins this season have come in overtime.
Portland took an early lead on a goal from Paulo Joao before the Navigators tied the score with six minutes left in the first half, courtesy of freshman Wyatt Braun.
Falmouth goalkeeper Caden Berry made seven saves.
SOUTH PORTLAND 4, NOBLE 0: Ben Morin tallied two goals, and Enoque De Dieu and Christiano Jundo also scored as the Red Riots (1-2) broke away from a 0-0 halftime tie against the Knights (1-1-1) in South Portland.
Michael Zaccaria needed just one save for the shutout. Hunter Michaud stopped seven shots for Noble.
SCARBOROUGH 3, GORHAM 0: Khalil Ghosheh had a goal and an assist as the Red Storm (3-0) handled the Rams (1-2) in Scarborough.
Ghosheh finished a feed from Finn Coburn in the first half to make it 2-0, then set up Cooper Mallar in the second half.
Carter Blanche scored the first goal, assisted by Denver Bachman.
Seamus Corry made two saves for the shutout. Nolan Plummer and Corbin Wilson shared goaltending duties for Gorham, combining for five saves.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
YORK 2, LINCOLN ACADEMY 0: Scarlett Ring and Zoe Carroll scored, Ava Hickey made two saves, and the Wildcats (2-1) defeated the Eagles (1-2) in York.
Ava Fontaine assisted on Ring’s goal.
BRUNSWICK 0, YARMOUTH 0: Jules Morin made four saves for Brunswick (1-0-1) and Linnaea Herring stopped three shots for Yarmouth (1-0-2) in a tie at Yarmouth.
FIELD HOCKEY
FREEPORT 3, BRUNSWICK 0: Sophia Bradford struck just 38 seconds into the game for the first of her two goals as the Falcons (4-0) defeated the Dragons (0-2-1) in Freeport.
Liza Flower also scored, assisted by Kam Lizotte. Reed Proscia set Bradford’s second goal with about three minutes remaining.
Freeport goalie Maddie Kryzak needed to make just one save. Brunswick’s Ella Duchette stopped 14 shots.
FRYEBURG ACADEMY 3, WAYNFLETE 0: Sophia Brown, Brooke Blood and Ella Dean scored for the Raiders (3-0) in a win over the Flyers (1-2) at Fryeburg.
Addie Valente, Jocelyn Roy and Sharis Santos each had an assist, while Rayna Wales stopped shots for the shutout.
Waynflete’s Mya Clark made 16 saves.
YORK 1, LINCOLN ACADEMY 0: Jacob Donnell scored late in the first half, Lukas Bouchard made nine saves, and the Wildcats (1-1-1) held off the Eagles (1-2) in Newcastle.
TRAIP ACADEMY 4, TELSTAR 1: Lillian Preston scored twice as the Rangers (2-1) topped the Rebels (0-3) in Bethel.
Noelle French added a goal and an assist, Lucy Bolanos also scored, and Eden Varney had two assists for Traip.
Vivi Charette scored for Telstar, assisted by Quinn Coolidge.
Traip goalie Madison Evans made seven saves, while Telstar counterpart Taejyah Lego had six stops.
YARMOUTH 2, SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 0: Nasveschuk scored both goals for the Clippers (2-1) against the Phoenix (2-1) in Jay.
Maddie Nieter had two assists and Celia Sinman assisted on the first goal. Goalie Emma Shannon earned the shutout.
VOLLEYBALL
BIDDEFORD 3, FALMOUTH 2: The Tigers (4-0) kept their unbeaten intact by rallying for a tight five-set victory against the host Navigators (1-3), winning the last two sets for a 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12 triumph.
Olive Clark led Falmouth with 13 kills. Sofie Asbjornsen had 11 kills and six aces.
FRIDAY’S BOYS’ SOCCER
HALL-DALE 3, WAYNFLETE 2: Karter Eldridge’s goal with 15 minutes to play capped a second-half comeback as Hall-Dale (3-0) won at Waynflete (0-1).
The Bulldogs scored first, midway through the first half, on a free kick from Keegan Cary. Waynflete’s Lucas Plumb tied the score on a free kick, and Abie Waisman’s goal gave the Flyers a 2-1 halftime lead.
A free kick goal from Jaxon Olsen early in the second half tied the game again, then Eldridge scored the winner, assisted by Olsen.
Eliot Adams made seven saves for Hall-Dale. Waynflete’s Diego Schair-Cardona stopped three shots.
FRIDAY’S FIELD HOCKEY
GREELY 5, WELLS 0: Maya Tracey and Maya Douglas each scored twice to lead the Rangers (2-1) past the Warriors (0-3) in Cumberland.
Anna Hendry was the other goal scorer.
