Richard Lockhart Sproul III

BOWDOINHAM – Richard Lockhart Sproul III, 78, formerly of Yarmouth, passed away peacefully at his home after battling pancreatic cancer. Dick “Rick” was born on July 25, 1945 in Brockton, Mass. to Richard L. and Helen (Hanscom) Sproul.

Along with his parents and his sister, Susan (Sproul) Taylor, Dick was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Heidi (Hannan) Sproul. He is survived by his wife of six years, Youngok Shin of Bowdoinham; and seven nieces and nephews, Gregg Taylor (Terri), David Taylor (Lisa), Mieke Wall, Michael Wall (Tasha), Scott Hannan (Carrie), Elyse Rioux (Stephen) and Nate Rioux (Hillery). He is also survived by his brothers-in law Tom Hannan and Doug Wall and sisters-in-law Pat Wall and Susan Hannan; and 10 great-nieces and nephews.

Dick was educated at Thayer Academy in Braintree Mass. and Kents Hill School in Readfield. After graduating from the University of Maine, Dick worked for many years at UPS then went on to get his realtor’s license in Maine. Dick enjoyed family events, sweets, travel, the Red Sox and Portland Sea Dogs and his favorite spot- the ocean and the coast of Maine. Dick’s love of the ocean (and lobster) was fostered as he spent summers at his grandparent’s home in Pemaquid. As a family, we will miss Dick’s sense of humor and infectious smile.

Dick was involved with many volunteer organizations. With the Big Brother, Big Sisters of Southern Maine, he mentored Michael Kennedy in Yarmouth and forged a lifelong relationship with him. Michael and his family became an extension to his own family. He also served on the board with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters. As a navy veteran, Dick wanted to give back to veterans. While working with Volunteer for Veterans in Yarmouth, he spent many hours visiting other vets, driving them to appointments and on errands.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at Riverside Cemetery, Smith St., Yarmouth.
