Eight people were injured in a two-vehicle, head-on crash involving a moose Friday night in Shirley, a town just south of Greenville in Piscataquis County.

The crash happened around 9:25 p.m., when a Jeep Cherokee heading south on Greenville Road struck a moose, according to a statement by the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision with the animal caused the vehicle to cross the median and crash into a Chevrolet Suburban that was traveling north.

The crash injured four adults and four children ages 5 to 9, none of whom were identified in the statement. All were transported to Northern Light CA Dean Hospital in Greenville.

The youngest child was later transferred via LifeFlight of Maine to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was in serious but stable condition, the sheriff’s office said Saturday.
