Mike Hagerty has stepped on to the Yarmouth High School turf field thousands of times over the past 20-plus years, but Thursday evening, his entrance was something completely different, as he was surprised by a throng of former players, coaches and admirers in a ceremony planned by his sister, Catherine Hickey.
Hagerty, who won 344 games and 13 Gold Balls with the Clippers between 1997 and 2023, announced in May he was stepping down. Thursday night, players from the modern day, his first Yarmouth team and even a large representation from the Deering girls’ squad he coached in the 1990s, were on hand. Hagerty was hailed for his coaching and character and was even roasted at times by his former players, members of the Yarmouth soccer community, current Yarmouth girls’ soccer coach Andy Higgins, former Clippers girls’ coach and longtime friend Rich Smith, longtime Greely coach Mike Andreasen and members of the electronic and print media.
“I’m so grateful and humbled,” Hagerty said. “I really felt the love tonight. I’m very blessed.”
